i'm in the same boat you are....

from the little i have gathered, the more you have to upload the better your downloading becomes. however, if you have nothing to upload it seems like it leaves you kinda screwed. i'm sure i am completely wrong, but that is what i gathered.

hopefully someone can provide an answer for us

I thought it had to do with seeds or somthing. I guess thats number of people with thing you can download. So i found somthing with lots of seeds but still no luck.

It depends on the number of computers seeding a particular download. If a torrent won't download then there are no computers seeding that particular program.

Are you behind a router, or using a wireless connection? If so, you may need to forward a port. Check out the router manual on how to do port forwarding for you router.

You may need to forward the port through your software firewall also, if you have one.

I have used several different torrent programs and for me Azureus has worked the best. It's the most user friendly and seems to be the most automated. WHen you go to download a file there are a few things to take into consideration. First of all how many there seeds there are. If there arent very many it's going to be slow going. Also if there are a bunch of leechers you are going to have a slow road as well. Always read the comments that are posted on a page with a download link as they can be very hellful as to any problem that particual file might have. :)
