Toshiba laptop- problem with 'hotkeys'

Win7 X64 Home Premium (clean install on newly formatted drive) - this is a Toshiba Satellite laptop, model L455D-S5976. All drivers installed perfectly and everything works perfectly, except for the FN hotkeys. For example, when you hold down the FN key and press F6, the screen should get dimmer, with F7 it should get brighter. Well, the thing is, the FN hotkeys work right when the desktop first appears, and they work for maybe 5 seconds after that, then . . . BAM! . . . they stop working. No error messsage, no lag, no weirdness. The Toshiba forum has a post for this exact problem for this exact laptop, but no replies were posted. I tried flashing the BIOS but the version on the Toshiba download site is the same as the version installed on the laptop so it won't let me do anything. Every other driver and utility from the Toshiba site has been installed and messed with thoroughly.... no dice.

(I wasn't sure if this was software, hardware, or driver problem - since all the drivers are installed, and the keys actually work for a short time, I figured hardware was a good bet)

You've probably already looked :-D but my search on error 0x80041003
at http://www.google.com/search?q=error+0x80041003&hl=en&num=10&lr=&ft=i&cr=&safe=images&tbs= gives lots of results.

I can't help on the info in your link. Too "geeky" for me. :major

Has the Toshiba Value Added Package been installed?

I could not find the support page for the your model. The closest I could get to was Satellite L455-S5975.

Download tab under the category of Utility.

If you click the more under applicable models, your model is listed for the package.

 

Yup, I installed everything from the Toshiba downloads page including the TVAP, Toshiba Assist, Toshiba HW Setup, Toshiba Eco Utility, etc.
