Toshiba Laptop shutting off...Killing Great Dane

My toshiba laptop put itself in hibernate mode. Now when I push the power button it trys to turn itself on for about one second and then shuts off again. Now here is the scoop. The computer has not been used much. But, it was attached to DSL today (my wireless router just broke) and then my Great Dane tripped over the cord and sent the computer crashing to the ground (only about 3 feet on carpet). The computer worked for about 5 minutes then put itself into hibernate mode. And, now the shutoff problems.

I am an absolute NOVICE at computers, so any ideas would be useful. I always go to Best Buy, but have been screwed so many times from them I was trying to find an alternate route. Any ideas??

Does it do it both when the computer is plugged in and when it's running just off the battery? I'm not sure what the problem is, but have no fear, there's plenty o' smart people here who can probably help you

I've worked at Circuit City, which, if you didn't know, is pretty much like Best Buy-- just a little worse. Those places stink in my opinion and you should never go there unless they have a really good deal on some nice piece of hardware (and even that rarely happens!).

Even though I can't help you, I think you'll be surprised how much you can fix at home with the help of some Major Geeks buddies, even if you don't know much about computers.

When it is running off of the battery it does the shut off thing. When the battery is taken out and I plug it in, it doesn't turn on at all- am I even doing the process right??. Again, I am no expert. I am in a panic since I am a nurse that does legal work and need the info from this computer.

What happens when the battery is in the computer AND it's plugged in? What exactly do you mean by "it tries to turn on?"

I know it sounds like a stupid question, but what does it do-- does something come up on the screen? Can you hear fans whirling? Does it beep when it comes on?

 

When it is plugged in and the battery is in it, and I push the power button it tries to turn on. And, what I mean is the blue light comes on for a sec, then you can hear the fan I do belive (or something else) trying to kick on. But, then it can't and shuts off. It sounds like when you first start a laptop and you get the noise from it starting to boot up with power. Hope that makes sense.

It sounds like you might be having some electrical problems, but that's just a wild guess on my part. Sometimes it takes a little while to get the solution on here, but if you have the weekend off and don't need the data on your PC until Monday, I'm sure someone can help you by then. If you need the data ASAP, I'm not sure what to tell you. Unless absolutely urgent, I wouldn't pay anyone to look at your computer until you've exhausted the minds of some more people on here

 

Well, thanks for the help. So, I guess I will wait to here from some other people on the boards here. And, I appreciate any help that can be offered from anyone...................I have to admit it is very frustrating!!!!
