Any input on the Toshiba Satellite laptop with 4GB of memory and 320 Gb hard drive? It seems to have good ratings and am considering going out and getting one for my daughter's college work. Thanks!

    Hi

Honestly, my opinion is that Toshiba has gone downhill the last year or two, quality-wise. If I were you, I'd look into an Acer or ASUS laptop, or if you're willing to spend more, a Sony Vaio laptop.

HP owns Compaq, Dell, Alienware, and probably a few other "brands"... I wouldn't buy any of them. Toshiba used to be pretty good, but like I said, the last while they've seemed to decline. Acer and ASUS aren't "top brands" (meaning advertised endlessly), but they're decent quality. I know several people that own them and are very happy. The recommendation for a Sony Vaio comes from personal experience -- they're good laptops, just a bit more on the pricey side.

Toshiba laptops have dropped in quality, but they're still decent, just not as good as they were a few years back, but still better than HP/Compaq and (IMO) Dell. I must say that IMO, Acer laptops aren't that great either. Asus laptops are good machines, Sony's are good too (but expensive). Lenovo (previously known as IBM) makes great, rugged laptops.
