Toshiba Recovery CD won't install Windows...

Just installed new hard drive on a Toshiba Satellite M45-S269 for a friend ...

Tried to run his Toshiba Recovery CD... it does boot, but just loops, asking OK.. then restarts... asks again... over and over...

Maybe, I thought, I had to format the hard drive first, so I did that with a Speedy Boot Disk.

Still, same result, Toshiba Recovery CD won't go.

    Any suggestions?

Seems like the "recovery CD" will not install on a new hard drive? What's up with that?

seems to me that a recovery cd will only recover or repair an existing os that's already installed on the hard drive.if the new hd doesn't have an os on it there is nothing to recover.

So, if your hard drive crashes, you need to buy a new windows cd?

I'm guessing you installed a new hard drive because the old one crashed. If you cannot recover any files on the old hard drive you had to install a new one. If that is the case, you unfortunately have to buy an entire new copy of windows.

dreamer is pretty much right there.if you cannot recover any data off the old drive and you don't have a legit copy of a windows os: xp, vista or win 7 then you will have to buy a new one.
how ever if you have a legit copy of a windows os that has only been used on that pc you can install it on that pc and if you have trouble with the activation you can contact Microsoft and explain to them that its the same os and pc just a new hard drive and they may let the activation go through.

Here's an update... installed brand new 300 GB SATA hard drive.

We do have valid license keys for all the software that was on the old hard drive.

First, the TOSHIBA Windows install CD would not install on a the new drive. (Boots, Click OK to install, then Warning..., then click OK... then reboots... repeat... ad nauseaum... )

Second, I used a GENERIC, OEM MS-WINDOWS XP HOME install CD and

Third, installed all of the TOSHIBA drivers, one-by-one, from same TOSHIBA boot CD... (the one that refused to install.)

It runs... I think there's an 80% chance this may work.... time will tell.

The Ethernet and Wi-Fi are ok... Trackpad is ok...

    Installed:

    WinXP Service Pack 3,
    BitDefender AntiVirus
    SpywareDoctor
Internet Explorer, and Firefox, and a few other essentials...

The system seems ok, for now, but there is no sound...

I'm not sure why the sound does not work, maybe we need more custom stuff from Toshiba?

(But all the Toshiba drivers were installed from the Toshiba Recovery CD, one-by--one.)

    Suggestions?

There looks to be only one sound driver for that model. http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/...r=M45-S269&selCategory=3&selFamily=1073768663

Not sure if it is self-installing or if you have to go to Device Manager and update the driver you have for the sound device. Probably a readme in the folder of it is self-extracting zip or if it is an installer it will delete the current driver before install.

Create a Restore Point then see what you get by installing the driver.

First problem, was the old hd a SATA? If not, that's probably why the recovery disk will not work. It is set up to install on an IDE drive; SATA drives need drivers installed before XP will install.

There is probably a way to slipstream the SATA driver into the recovery disk but that is way above my pay grade.

The new SATA drive was plugged into the laptop where the original internal SATA drive had been. SATA connectors are not compatible with other drive types.
