    Hi

What Service Pack is your Windows XP at?
In device manager do you have any yellow ! marks by any device and if so what?
If you boot into Safe Mode (F8 at boot and choose Safe Mode with Networking) does your CD drive list and work ok?

Do you have any virtual drive software installed for example Daemon Tools, MagicISO, CloneDrive etc? and if so uninstall as a test.

What you could try is to delete the upper and lower drive filters and the info and FixIt are HERE once done reboot and test.

What worries me a little is your comment on permissions, so are you logged in as the admin of the PC? Have you scanned for malware?
