Well i have an Acer Aspire E5-511P, yeah i know its a cheap system. I had a Dell Inspiron1720 that lasted about ten years, and still have. Anyway on my Acer something happened after i bought, Acer doesn't do anyhting about it, and its a major problem they have. Either there was a windows update somewhere that stopped my Touchpad from working. Is there a way to find out what touchpad i have inside. I downloaded a driver someone put on Acer forums, but that doesn't seem to fix the problem. Any ideas, can i get another touchpad installed maybe something better. Or does someone have an idea on how to fix this. I am also using windows 8.1

Is the touchpad showing in Device Manager? If it does, is it shown as a problem device - yellow question or exclamation mark?

The only thing that has a exclamation point under it is in the Human Interface Devices. It is I2C HID Device that has that !

That's probably the touchpad. Double-click it, then click the Driver tab, and click Update Driver...
Then select the option for Windows to automatically search your PC and the internet for the latest driver software.

I tried that again, but i do remember doing that before and it states that it is up to date. But it still has that ! Is there a way to see what touch pad was installed within the system. So maybe i can directly to the manufacturers website? Any other ideas.

    Main page http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers

It has 2 different hardware listed for Aspire E5-511P
TouchPad ELANTECH Touchpad Driver 13.6.1.1 16.8 MB 2014/10/27
TouchPad Synaptics Touchpad Driver 6.3.9600.16384 1.9 MB 2014/10/27

    I'd probably download both
    Code:

PLODR- i have the two drivers you mentioned, I have them downloaded in the download folder, is this the correct place to store/house these. And it seems that i have a few other drivers also. Question: should i delete them all or just keep the two that you mentioned. Or delete them all and then re-install the two. i would like to get my touch pad working again, i bought another laptop so I wouldn't be tied to a desktop, which feels like i am, because i always need a mouse.

I'd probably create a folder inside downloads and label it "possible drivers" and move them there. But anywhere you store them is fine as long as you can easily locate your drivers when you need them.
I would not delete anything just yet. Before you chose one of the two, you have to figure out what touchpad hardware is installed.
You are not going to be installing both those drivers. Only one is the correct one and we want to be sure you pick the proper driver.
See if this program, Belarc, can tell what touchpad you have.
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/belarc_advisor.html

It not only lists lots of hardware details, it also shows what Windows updates were installed.
Perhaps you can look over the updates and see if any Elan or Synaptic update was installed by MS. I NEVER install any hardware update suggested by MS because it tends to break things. I say this from personal experience.

Well i will download the tool from Belarc and let you know, you seem to be on the right path because that is somewhat of what Acer is saying who is at fault, MS.

I realise you must be very frustrated by now. Hang in there.
MajorGeeks' Top Freeware Picks lists only 2 driver updaters. I have tried both and DriverEasy is superior to Driver Booster. Download DriverEasy (3.27 MB), install and run it, and click Scan. Click the Download tab (you don't have to download anything at this point). Check for the touchpad driver - the size will show. You can compare that to the drivers you downloaded. If it leaves you none the wiser, just download that driver and install it. DriverEasy allows to Restore the driver.

Have you tried the function key (fn) + F7 yet? This serves to toggle between the USB mouse and the touch pad.

One of the first things we tried through Acer, this little remedy they have going on doesn't work, even by many people who tried it as seen on their forums board.

DriverEasy isn't Freeware either, wish Majorgeeks as they do with alerts for programs that might download advertisements, third party programs would not put freeware when you have to pay to for something. I downloaded this and its asking me to buy a license, that is not freeware.

Have a look at the screenshot. It's free. And I downloaded drivers... for free.

That's enough of your rants here. You're wrong. Get over it and move on.

    "Limitations:
Drivers only downloaded one at a time"

    Works fine.

Yeah i figured it out, if you want faster downloads you pay. No one is ranting, thank you to Eldon and plodr who are helping me figure this problem out,its great to have people help you and someone who doesn't have a Major Attitude. I was replying to the software. I asked me for a license at first. Now if i can get back to those that are here to help.

Microsoft 8.1 threw me off when it came out I am used to XP and Vista. In 8.1 where do you get into or how do you get into the BIOS.I read in the Acer forums briefly that you could change the mouse settings in it,and that worked for some. Anyone have an idea what they might mean by this. Thanks guys/girls for helping. Having a USB mouse makes me feel as though i am using a desktop.(Laugh along with me)

Restart the PC and as soon as POST appears, press the Pause key. Look on the screen which key to press to access the BIOS - either the F2 or Del key. What you intend doing in the BIOS you should ask in the Acer forums.

Rather open Control Panel and click Mouse. You should be able to easily switch between Touchpad and Mouse.

NO, you complained here, then called out MajorGeeks in ANOTHER thread without saying even saying what software it was. Here's your post (below) that you apparently forgot about and once pointed out that it CLEARLY stated one download at a time, you want to pretend it didn't happen.

Oh, and it never ASKED you for a license. Just like when you didn't read the one download limit when you first downloaded the program, you also clicked the upgrade button when you became impatient because, let's be honest at this point, your a moron.
