TPC Optimizer for tweaking my computers internet speed

Finally was able to upgrade internet speed thru my provider. Underground fiber optic cables, yada yada yada. Upgraded to 40 mbps.

Technician came to the house to do the in-house changes and before he left he said that my computer would only be able to utilize 20 mbps. Said it's not us (Centurylink) but rather your computer.

Long story longer, i tested the speed on various sites and was shocked that it was only getting 8-9 mbps download speeds. :eek when we were getting 5 before the upgrade.

I searched around and came across a piece of software "TPC Optimizer" here at MajorGeeks and downloaded it. Ran the program, re-booted the computer and the best speed test I could run was 12.5 mbps.

Anyone have any experience with TPC Optimizer or opinions on how well it works. Not sure what to do or try before calling my provider and try and find a solution. I'm not about to pay for 40 and settle for 12. :mad

Your call to your ISP is your best bet. Ask what settings are optimal. What is the maximum packet size, etc.
But remember maximum bandwidth and speed are not exactly the same. If you game it's all about ping, if you download it's all about bandwidth.

Here in the UK, and for good reason, ISPs always describe their offers as 'up to 40mbps' or whatever as, just like cars and their advertised mpg figures, nobody ever gets the claimed speed. When checking actual download speeds at speedtest.net or wherever, as you appear to have done, the results depend on a whole host of factors, both external and internal, and include the capabilities of your router and your network adapters and, if you test using WiFi, the quality of the router's radio signal as that is heavily affected by the nature of the building and the location of your equipment.

To get a true measure you need to get into your router config and check the speed at which the line is synchronising, as that should be much closer to the claimed 40mbps, though even that can be inaccurate unless you connect the router directly to the incoming cable, so avoiding using any internal wiring.

Take a look at this go to start click run gpedit.msc and then go to administrative templates then network and then go to qos packet scheduler then go to limit reservable bandwith and enable it and set it 0 after that test your speed again and you should see a boost.

    Hope this helps
