    Hmmm....

"Traceroute is a command which can show you the path a packet of information takes from your computer to one you specify. It will list all the routers it passes through until it reaches its destination, or fails to and is discarded. In addition to this, it will tell you how long each 'hop' from router to router takes."

OK, from a command prompt you type something like:

    Code:
    tracert google.com

    Which will yield this:

Are you seeing something like this?

Hold the Window Key, then press the X key, that will bring up a "context" menu. Left click on "Command Prompt (Admin)". From there, you can run Trace route, ping, etc. Most routers have this function built into them also, so that you remove the "Middle man" being windows, out of the loop.

So you cant open a command prompt window that lasts or more than a half second?

Try typing the below from Start > Run

    Code:
    cmd /k
See if that keeps the window open...

If so, close it and type"

    Code:
    cmd /k tracert google.com

Cipher, what they most likely are doing, is running the Tracert command from Run, not opening a Command Prompt Window.

OK, hadn't thought of doing it that way.

We need to get the OP onto the command prompt... ;)

    :(
Sorry then, gave you the shortcuts for Win8. For Vista & 7, Winkey plus R brings up the Run dialog box.

It is not a Dos window. It is a Command Window. Like Linux has a Terminal window, Windows has a Command window.
