Hi there, I have an old copy of Neotrace on my computer. I use AntiVir to scan for viruses and other programs to scan for spyware regularly and am pleased to say I find nothing. But Port Scans keep coming up on my firewall's security log (I use Sygate). It says "Someone is scanning your computer" and lists them as "Minor Threats." The thing is I don't really know how to use Neotrace that well. What do I do when I find out who scanned me with the "WhoIs" button? What is the purpose of pinging or backtracing? I read on another forum that pinging the scanner is just like calling out your whereabouts. Is it a good idea to backtrace and or ping the scanners? Or am I just showing them where I am, thereby compromising my stealthed ports?

    Thanks for your time!

    Mike

Often, the minor threats are simply cookies or something from a website and are harmless. I do not suggest you go looking for what it is too hard, if you accidentally ping a good hacker, he is coming after you. Big thing out there is hacker wannabes, little script kiddies looking for open ports that most people have closed. But, if a good hacker had scanned you and moved on, your asking for trouble to chase after them.

Cool. So as long a website such as ShieldsUp says my ports are all stealth, then I should just ignore any minor port scans that my firewall is telling me about? I have Sygate by the way.

The problem with firewalls is they report "in your face" stuff all the time. The fact is you'll get thousands of port scans per day and you're none-the-wiser. Is the firewall doing its' job? yes, but I would check the logs once every other day and turn off any popup notifications.

Thanks Kodo, I was out for a few hours. To add to what Kodo said, most firewall programs come setup to notify you all the time. Like spyware programs, they tend to report things that are not bad, yet can be considered questionable (very grey area to them, not us) so it looks impressive to you, the consumer, that your blocking all this stuff you never knew was attackign you.
