hello, a simple question maybe but, what is the tracking log and what does it do?

    RE: [drive]:/system volume infomation/tracking log

Well, it's actually "..\tracking.log" you left out the 'dot' before 'log'. No bigggie. It seems as if it may be malware/rootkit/virus related, but don't freak out because I found no concrete proof of that. I did a Google search for system volume information\tracking.log and found several references to it in other forums/blogs where viruses were the topic. I also found these links below that may tell you something. Maybe do a Google search yourself and see what you find. You can always empty the folder by toggling System Restore (turn it off, then reboot and turn it back on). What problem are you having that brought this up in the first place?

The Distributed Link Tracking Client service monitors activity on NTFS volumes and stores maintenance information in a file called Tracking.log, which is located at the root of each volume in a hidden folder called System Volume Information. This folder is protected by permissions that allow only the system to have access to it. The System Volume Information folder is also used by other Windows XP Professional services such as Indexing Service.

    Update:

This issue is fixed (we excluded the folder from scanning). Users can also manually fix the issue by going in to AV advanced options (depending on what AV software you're using) and excluding the folder from scanning.

    Try it!
