tracking processes

My system shuts down on it's own periodically. Just before it does I can hear the hard drive "grinding" as if a process was launched that needed a lot of system resources.

I was wondering if there was a piece of software available that I can use to monitor all system processes and have it automatically save as it writes the file so I can go in after the system crashes to see what started just before the crash.

Yesterday I uninstalled and reinstalled Spy Bot and I activated the teatimer function... I'm wondering if that is causing the crash.

    Thanks,
    GV

99% of the time, shutting down is caused by overheating. The computer shuts down to save the CPU.

Aside from the hard drive grinding, you might hear a fan speeding up trying to control the heat.

Have you cleaned out the inside of your computer?
Do the vents and the power supply fan look dusty?

    Ohhhh it definitely needed cleaning.
I cleaned it and it shut off again but this time much quicker.

I think what may be happening is the fan that is (I think) supposed to be running to cool down the power supply is not running. There are so many resistors and "radiators" in that specific area of the box I would not be surprised that it overheats quickly.
I've attached the before and after pictures.
This machine is about 5 years old and was in a dirty building for two of those five years.

If the power supply fan is not running, get another power supply. It is not very safe to take a power supply apart to replace the fan.

You may be able to just buy one and replace OR some computers require a certain size and shape. Post the brand and model of the computer and the current wattage of the power supply and someone can point you to a replacement.

If you run the computer with the side off, are all the other fans running?
