Hi barnacle, is this external drive just for storage, as in you can boot your computer without it connected?

Do you not need any of the data on it?

If it is just for storage and you dont need any dta from it then you can format it no problem.

Just go to "my computer" find the drive listed and "right click" on it, then select "format"
it should have "NTFS" as the default, if it isn't select it. and DONT do a "quick format" it is not good
    for longevity.

yes,, the drive is an external and yes i can boot then plug it in later.
it is only for backup of photos and music (VERY IMPORTANT!!)

i never did figure out the bundled software that came on it for one touch backup and stuff. had no use for it anyway.
but i kinda made a mess of things and want to start over.
    it's formatting right now.

    thanks for the help!!

Do not format the drive you will lose all data on it!

    PHEW! :)

I thought you had mis-read my post and was in the middle of wiping all your important music and photo's.

If you want to have a proper clean drive you want to wipe it and write zeroes to the whole drive.

To do this grab the UBCD and burn it as an ISO image file to a CD...

Boot from the disk [put in the drive and reboot]

Go to.. hard disk tools and find the option called "active @ killdisk" it will do two pass zero write to the drive then you can clean format it again and you will have a fresh drive :)

ha ha ha,,, i wondered if that's what you thought! no,, thanks for the concern tho.
i will try your suggestions too.
is this an advantage over just formatting?

It is not mandatory by any means, but is good practise, especially if you are going to use the drive for storage, I very rarely if ever format a drive without zeroing it first.

It is simple to do, takes a while to finish but it is not like you have to do anything during that time, so i see no reason not to unless you ar ein a mad rush to get he drive up and runing :)

    Q

sidenote: that UBCD is an incredibly usefull tool to have, it is full of many many many diagnostic and repair programs.

it says i cannot use either of these version and must use the bundled software that came with it?

Do you not have any discs that came with it?

Can you try the drive in another computer?

Cos after looking into it this drive should not need any software to run anyway, it should plug and play without any problem.

Also what exactly happens when you plug it in?

Have you tried restarting the computer with it plugged in?

Does it show up in device manager?

no disks came with it, it was all on the drive.
later i will try with my laptop and see what happens.
right now, when i plug it in, i can hear it spinning and the blue lite flickers some. but while looking at "My Computer", drive 'F' blinks on then off. never on for more than a second then off for a minute or so. never stays on.
and while it's plugged in, everything else sloooooooows waaaaaaay down, like it's about to freeze up?

this all started when i tried to do the second backup to this drive since i bought it. i noticed my first backup folders were empty? they used to be full??
so i did another copy of files to the new drive. then when i try to delete the old, empty files, it won't let me. an error message about file path not found or something. i take a break,, come back and my new files are now empty as well and it won't let me delete.
now i am assuming the 'one touch' backup software on the drive is causing some problems so i decide to get rid of it,, and here i am!
    crap!

Lets see how it acts with another computer. (I've got a feeling it will work fine on another 'puter)
