This thread seems to have gotten hijacked. From what I've read I can use Windows Easy Transfer to move my documents, pictures, music, favorites from my XP to my new computer with Vista -- but is it correct that I am going to have to reinstall all of my software?

I just bought an external hard drive, do I need to do separate backups for my software on XP and software on Vista?

Please get this thread back on track.

To answer the "am I going to have to install all of my software?" then thats a yes as it will need to re-install its registry keys again, but also double check that all the software you are going to re-install is Vista compatible, expecially security software.

Many makers do now have updates for many of their products or alternatives are available that do same job.

Depends on what backups your talking about is it just data files like Word Docs or Images etc?

Then no, they will open on either Operating System.

But it maybe worth seperating any that are from applications that dont run on Vista, so you know what Windows version they are from.
