Hi I recently tried to transfer my music folder from one HD to another using the XP transfer wizard, I connected 2 coms. via a data transfer cable. The first 2 times it stuck after a couple of hours and the third and final time in ran for 11 hours and completed 1.24% and with a quick calculation it would have taken 3 weeks 24/7 to complete, Is this the normal transfer rate I' m interested to know if anybody else has experienced this??
PS nothing else was running at the time/ folder 7.4 Gig.

never used the XP transfer wizard myself. I usually just cut and paste. You transfer is beyond the acceptable limits of being slow so something is definately amiss. What kind of "transfer cable" are you using?

that works out if you were using paralell or serial cable.

USB is much faster, or even better, crossover ethernet cable

The best way to transfer data from 1 HD to another is the Slave-Master method.

Slave the Main drive to the Target drive (Set as master) and cut and paste whatever you need.

Serial cable is the way of the past....like Win3.11

Thanks for the info, I went via serial ports as HD's had different Mobo configs. I specifically asked at store for Data tranfer cable and was asked what was it for? so I assume I was given the correct one. Have now formatted the Folder/HD but tips will come in useful next time and am busily uploading again. Thanks again.

you were given very poor advice by that person.
The best ways to do this are the follwing in order of speed first.

    1. HDD to HDD transfer in same machine
    2. Ethernet (Cat5/RJ45) crossover connection between 2 pcs
    3. USB transfer cable (Though USB2.0 is 480Mbs as opposed to 12Mbs for USB 1.0 )

I use a Promise ATA133 Controller card. I like to run both as masters and find cut and paste as fastest or easiest. is there really a better way thats faster?

Well, the fastest way is to move the HDD, but the best way, IMO is to use Ethernet. It saves you any potential problems associated with opening a case and installing/removing a HDD, and doesn't involve use of a screwdriver. Plus, you can leave both machines on.

'Course, if you don't have a NIC, you'll have to open the case anyways.

Another alternative is to burn the data to a CD-R.

Thanks for the tips, and roamin about I suddenly thought would this work, so all had to do was open My Computer/Folders then just drag the folder from one HD to the required HD and 'Hey Presto' nearly 5 Gig of music transfered in about 90 seconds. Hope the tip comes in useful for others.PS All of this was in XP.Pro. Toke
