(This is a business PC and cannot lose anything! Is their any open source programs that can do this or do Ibuy Norton Ghost?? IDK what I need or what to do. Also remmeber from 2000 to XP.

Also note there is a program written by my company on this PC and I cannot get it back hence why I nedd ALL PROGRAMS AND FILES.

There are a few free ways to do this .. but I'd go with Ghost.. if this data is so important I'd not mess with trying a freeware solution. But really if this stuff is so important don't they back it up anyway? Might want to make that a part of your new solution.

It sounds like your gonna need to upgrade from 2k to XP especially if you do not have the ability to reload some software. Hopefully there is still enough fee space to do the install itself.
But first make a backup with ghost or backup my pc... because if the upgrade hits a snag, you can recover.. or if the upgrade is successful and you find that your important software is incompatible, you can go back.

Since he is buying a new hard drive, he can use the hard drive cloning utility that comes with it (or Norton Ghost) to clone his old win2k install to the new drive and then upgrade install XP onto the new hard drive. He will still have the original HD with the original W2K installation and it's programs unaltered should there be issues.

I'd go with that procedure and copy the 2k to the new drive then upgrade...
BUT if this data is so important I'd still get a real backup system and start a disaster plan.
I guess that is me half asleep last night...;)

The problem is I dont have 2000. 2000 came on the machiene with the computer. However I do have XP. But if I go out and get a windows 2000 disk and then copy my files to 2000 and upgrade to XP. OK but what about by Programs and all the stuff configured in the registry how do I go about copying that?

When you clone a hard drive with Ghost or similiar programs, everything is copied including all you are concerned with.

I must ask: Is there any reason you don't just install the new hard drive as slave and use it to store the data you need and use the old hard drive to hold the OS and programs?
