I am about to update my 15 year old PC. I need some advice about using my current HDD 2Tb Western Digital SCSI Disk as an external HDD. This has all my apps plus Windows 10 Pro on it.

Windows 10 Pro upgrade has a digital license. So, can I transfer from the soon to be external HDD, my Windows 10 Pro onto the soon to be installed 1Tb SSD? Will my digital license be transferable too? And should I create a rebootable USB? And what problems might ambush me on the way?

    My hardware updates will be:
Aorus B450 Elite AM4 socket Mobo
    Ryzen Intel 8 core i7 3.4MHz CPU
    Corsair Vengeance LPX 16Gb DDR4 3000MHz RAM
Adata XPG SX 8260 1Tb SSD M.2 PCIe
UGreen SATA external HD enclosure - Western Digital SATA HDD
    NVidia GeForce GTX 1060 6Gb

    Many thanks, B9

As long as it is the same motherboard, you should be able to copy the existing hard drive as is, and it should boot up, and the digital licence should re-register.
Changing motherboards would normally lead to digital coa not accepting .
I have found that a Windows 10 installation will boot in another machine, but need to have a new coa.
However drivers are very good in Windows 10, so it should pick up the different hardware, and I have found, install most drivers needed-
So if you want the programs etc: that are on your present hard drive, it is worth the try at copying the whole hard drive , as is, then putting in the new setup/motherboard,when ready, and attempt the boot. Probabililities that I have found are good.
If it does not work, then, you have your old stuff on the old hard drive, and can work on anything you miss, by connecting via usb to the new setup.
I found Partition Wizard very good for cpying hard drives, as it has the abiity to copy as is, or,to fit to any size hard drive/ssd.

Many thanks for your reply baklogic.

I don't think my old mobo I'm replacing has an M.2 slot for my SSD. But, the new SSD does come with "Acronis True image HD, disk migration utility" which hopefully may help with migrating Windows 10 to the SSD when mounted in the new mobo.

    Any thoughts?

    Many thanks, B9

The migration utility should be good (I have never had to use one)-Otherwise, a straight copy using an external enclosure-2.5/3.5 inch USB 2.0 3.0 HDD SSD Case Hard Drive Disk External Laptop Enclosure-they are very cheap, if you shop around.

Many thanks baklogic, I've got an external hard drive enclosure. So I'll start the rebuild this week - hopefully .

Great- If you use Partition Wizard, you can use it as is to copy whole hard drive- it does not other other software to copy.

Many thanks baklogic - rebuild's on hold as I ordered an Intel cpu instead of an AMD one. What an idiot....!
