Transfering HDD Data

Hello Major Geeks,

Since it is Christmas time, I was hoping to get a new HDD. I am getting a Western Digital 500gb Caviar Black. I was wondering (since I don't want to buy a new operating system) if I can transfer the data from my old HDD to the new one. I am using XP and am running on a Compaq Presario SR1630NX (the only parts that remain the same are the HDD and the case, though). And if so, can I use a cable that plugs into the Computer directly to the HDD. Many thanks in advance, and Merry Christmas!

If a desktop, you could connect it as a slave, then clone the original onto it.

 

I don't think my MoBo can do that though. My motherboard is manufactures by Gigabyte it's model number is MA785GM-US2H. I remember reading that you cannot run more than one hdd at a time, unless you have a floppy disc drive. Also the cable I have can only connect the 2 devices at a time to the MoBo. Thanks though, if there isn't any way around that, I will try that.

 

If the same as the Presario I found when I Googled, should have a CD drive also.
If the same connection types as your hard drive, replace the CD drive with the WD Caviar and good to go.
Works on my desktops all the time.
