I have a bunch of avi files on my computer that I am trying to burn to disc, however, I keep getting an error. First I had to use winavi to change the format and I thought I had to change it to wm2 files or something like and now it goes through the Nero encoding 3 hour process and kicks it out saying I have the wrong media in there. I bought dvd-r I thought that was what I needed but when I am trying to burn a dvd it says I need cdrw. Can anyone help me?? I cannot believe I bought this LG 16x external dvd burner and it came with NO BOOK NO real instructions. IM soooo lost.
    Thanks.

Is your pc within the minimum specs needed to get the drive to work on your pc. Look at the box or online at the manufactures offical site.

Now, first is your LG disc writer able to write onto DVD blank media or only Cd blank media. Check the box or right click on C drive go to properties, hardware tab and it usually says right there if it is a DVDRW or a CDRW drive (check on line too). Since u got an LG it might say LGDVDRW and next to it DVD/CD-r. If not u either don't have a dvd write driver or u need to reinstall the software for the drive.

Next when u start nero up, make sure u have selected that u want to burn a dvd and not a cd. To make it simple just use Nero Express and on top select the drive the LG is on maybe it would be the one labeled as --- D: LG DVD RW [DVD] on the top of nero express - the [dvd] indicates u want to burn a dvd. If it's nero that's the problem that it isn't providing the option then reinstall nero or try a different backup software like CDBurnerXP 3.0.116 Beta found here in MG at http://majorgeeks.com/CDBurnerXP_d4242.html
just to see if it's nero or not.

If this doesn't work maybe the drive might be damaged so u could try an exchange it. If ur 30 days or what not are up then contact the manufacture as it could still have an active warranty.

By the way if u just wanted to copy avi's to a disc without coversion u don't need to reformat them into a different format. If u do need to then u do. Nuff said.

    Good Luck.

By the way if u are really not sure about what u got check the top or back model number and post it here. NOt the serial number!

Ok I checked everything and the only thing I am lacking is enough memory I have 2 memory chips in their a 256 and a 64, have order another 256 but everything is up to par from what I can tell. Installed is an HL-DT-ST-DVDRRW-GSA-2166D-USB.
also it goes through this encoding video thing that takes hours.
I have never been this confused in my life. thanks for your help so far.

Last night I was able to convert using winavi the file to a dvd but when i go to burn it to dvd there are two folders an audio and a video and the video contains a bunch of stuff with a vob file. I burned them to a dvd once with cdburnerxp pro and it played for about 10 seconds then errors out. I figure its a step in the right direction. I tried to burn the avi and they dont work on the dvd player. I need to figure out what conversion software will work the best and once its converted what to actually burn to the disc. Any thoughts?
    thanks.

According to this post, you have Nero. Use Nero InfoTool to identify your drive and what media it is compatible with.
Run Nero Burning Rom and select 'DVD Video' on the left sidebar. Click the 'New' button at the bottom of the window that opens up. Drag the Video_TS folder with the .vob, .ifo and .bup files in it over to the far left and drop it onto the red Video_TS folder in the far left pane of the window and burn. If your drive is capable of burning DVDs, you should have a working movie.
