My notebook's mainboard is dead. All my
important data is on it's hdd.

I can't just connect it as an external drive and pull out the data because some of my data (important stuff) is encrypted with a software. The software is hide folders xp

The data is very important for me so how can i transfer it without corrupting the files?

Greetings, 00pm, and welcome to MajorGeeks.

Why not try decrypting the data instead of moving it? Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm not familiar with that particular software) but if you can connect the drive as an external to a computer running the encryption program it would seem that you could then manipulate the data.

I have a client who does exactly that: encrypted records are kept on a discrete USB drive and when the data needs to be accessed he just plugs it into an office machine and decrypts the data that he needs.

I have never seen that program either, but it does say in the FAQ,
If all you (or a badguy) needs to do it connect that drive to another computer to see your "hidden" folders, I consider that a serious security flaw!

Yeah, looks like Hide Folders might be just a location mask (the "hide") and permissions block (the "lock") kind of software - I don't see any real data encryption going on.

@00pm: Once you get this present issue resolved, if you're serious about protecting sensitive data then you might consider looking into a dedicated encryption program.

A simple adapter cable may be easier and less expensive. This particular one supports both SATA and EIDE (PATA) drives. However, if looking for something more permanent, an enclosure would be a better solution as an enclosure "encloses" the drive, offering better protection from physical damage.

So I bought a hdd box since i will be using my hdd as an external drive. I could transfer and open my data easily on my desktop as you suggested. It was visible and not encrypted.

Glad it works and thanks for the followup.
