Transferring iPod music from CDs to a PC without iTunes

I have an iPod that was initially connected with another teacher in my department who moved to another school. On this iPod are at least 200 songs downloaded off of CDs we have paid for. There is NO music that we have paid for via iTunes. They have all been copied from our CD collection. When our information was transferred over to a new computer over a year ago, iTunes was no longer on the computer, so if we plugged the iPod into the computer, we would lose all the songs.
Is there a way to transfer this music from this iPod to another iTunes account or quite possible to the computer first without wiping out the downloaded CD music?
I would like to begin adding additional songs to this iPod for my classes I teach.
Have you heard anything about TouchCopy by Wide Angle Software? I don't want to have to search through the CDs to copy all the 200+ individual songs again.
    Thank you for your assistance.
    Nancy

This is only for music purchased on iTunes. I have downloaded only specific music from a CD collection our school has. Any other suggestions?
    Thank you.

    Hi

Thought, sorry the options for copying from iPod to PC where in that link, need to update some links of mine I guess.

But if your iPod is not a Touch then you should be able to open it as a portable drive via My Computer and navigate to the location below, or do adjust the name of iPod as that's what you have called it.

Just disable iTunes so it does not sync.

Then click in Windows Explorer Tools > Options > View tab > and check the Show hidden files and folders

    Portable Media Devices\NAME IPOD X:\iPod_Control\Music

Should be able to copy all the music to a new folder on your PC, note I have only tried this with a 2nd Gen iPod, does not work with a Touch (tried a few times, but the Touch have a weird file system)

Alternate to try as the above method and the way iTunes names and saves files the track names may not be what they where originally called. I did look through previous posts of mine on here on the subject and one app Sharepod is no paid software, but Yamipod is still freeware and should do what you wish.

    Hi

I did like Sharepod and used it, when it was freeware to recover some music off my iPod Touch a 1st gen, when the main button died, and needed to transfer music to my new 2nd Gen Touch.

Playback is where the application in question can actually play the media for you as well as just transfer it, all Sharepod does is transfer media.

The article you link to is from 2009 so its note on the software being donationware is out of date.

So, for a newbie, which one would you suggest of the 3.

Also, how do you disable iTunes?

If there are over 200 songs, will there be enough room to do this on my computer?

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Nancy

To disable iTunes for now, I just plug in my iPhone or iPod and then as soon as iTunes starts use the red X top right corner to close it.

Then I have tested a few out and Yamipod did not work with my Windows 8 PC, but I did notice an older free version of Sharepod HERE that worked, doesn't have all the features of the new paid for version but worked ok

As for enough room for 200 songs then sadly I don't know the size of your Hard Disk Drive and free space in your PC you have at present but open My Computer and right click your C Drive and choose Properties and that piechart in the middle + the figures above should tell you have much free space you have, as a very rough rule of thumb and as all tracks can be of different size this could be variable I did a check on 250 songs (did 250 to give some wriggle room) in my collection and the size was 1.76GB

So what is your Windows version you use?

First off create a New Folder on your C drive in My Documents etc

If Windows XP then just run the Sharepod (if you are running Windows Vista/7/8 then right click the Sharepod icon and choose Run as Administrator*) and with a iPod connected the main screen should search for music and then list as below (note this is my iPod Touch and music on that iPod).

Then you can do two things to copy the music, you can pick individual tracks you wish to save by holding down the CTRL key and clicking the tracks as below, I mention this as this software can also copy any Books for the ITunes Bookstore you could have saved, but your iPod doesn't have this feature, but mentioned this for others who may read.

or you can just click one track in the main window and then press CTRL+A key to highlight all for copying as below

Then click the Copy to Computer icon in the top left corner (highlighted in Blue) and the box below will show, not you can copy the tracks directly to iTunes or untick the Copy to iTunes box (highlighted in Red) and then in the browse button (highlighted in Green) and search for a location to save this music too and the previously saved folder you created, mine you can see in the image below.

then choose the format for the tracks to be saved the best one I feel is the 1st one (highlighted in Purple)

Then click and the track will start copying, may take a while, depends on how quick your PC and hard drive is.

Once completed open your folder of copied music and dah dah!

*only mention running Windows Vista/7/8 as admin in case the iPod hardware is not found, saves any hassle*

    Hope this helps.

Will this work even if this isn't the iTunes account and computer that I initially downloaded the CD music to the iPod?
I am on a Vista computer.

I do have en empty 32 G jump drive. Could I use that?

Won't be able to address this until the middle of next week. I will get back to you.

Thank you for your guidance. I appreciate all you help. Can't wait to do this next week.

Yes you do not need the iTunes account that the Music was downloaded from BUT you do need iTunes installed as from what I gather the software needs some of the drivers that iTunes installs to help it find the device.

That's fine, just right click the software's icon and choose Run as Administrator (don't need to do this but I always err on the safe side with older software). Note you do not need to install this software as its standalone.

Yes should not be a problem, I would just create a folder on your Jump Drive called ipod music and then click the Green highlighted area in a screenshot above and navigate to that folder.

No problems, just let me know how you get on and you are very welcome.
