I have a camcorder that uses these tapes and most people actually used hi-8 cassettes to record before the millennium era.

I want to transfer these tapes into dvd's but most converters i see are rated like junk and won't work on anything beyond vista or xp.

Anyone tried or know of any reliable ones that work on windows 7?

I used to record the hi8 tapes to vhs format , by hooking up the audio and video cables to the ones on the tv then i would stream picture to the tv and insert a vhs tape and record it. The tv's i did this with had a built in vhs player.

Do you guys think i could do the same thing if i get a tv with a built in dvd player? Or is there another method ?

I know there are others ways but i wanted it to be less of a hassle and best conversion. I am sure i could hook up my camcorder to my tv stream the video and sound and get a dvd camcorder and use a tripod and record the tv. However this would capture other sounds around my house and this would be sort of annoying on top of not capturing the best video.

You can buy a stand-alone DVD recorder like this:

    http://www.frys.com/product/6336091?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

It has standard RCA (R/W/Y) and S-Video inputs. Since it is a direct transfer, it only requires the AV cables - no computer or adapters are required.

I would first transfer the movies to a standard grade DVD disc. From there, if you want to make the final copy something that will last "forever" (or as close to it as possible), I would copy it to "archival" grade DVDs such as the link below or store it on a cloud drive site like OneDrive.

if you wanted to save some money you can upload the video to your computer with an a/v capture card, external or internal, and then burn to dvd. that way you can edit if need be and do it for about 40.00.

Interesting. I just ordered from Amazon.com a Diamond VC500 One Touch for $32.49 and added a spindle of DVD-R to order to get free shipping.

    Now the fun begins.

I am curious how your diamond vc500 project turned out?

A while ago i bought a ''easycap'' adapter similar to the diamond vc500 except i paid about $10 for it... well it was trash i couldn't get it to record anything correctly and it some of the drivers would just never worked. In xp i was able to more or less tweak it a bit but it was still near useless.

I was looking to get something like a diamond vc500 or better i guess at this point i wouldn't really mind dishing out more money for something that would actually work i just want to transfer some old hi-8 videos to dvd .

I would need the software the device uses to be compatible with windows 7 or windows 8 something the ''easycap'' just couldn't do for me
