    Quick question. :)

My birthday laptop came with a whole bunch of pre-installed bloatware that I'll be spending the day removing. The plan is to remove everything except the OS, (including the free trial of MS Office, since I will be installing OpenOffice on it), and then go to the ASUS website and read descriptions of all the utilities, and then reinstall what looks useful.

Among the pre-installed stuff is TrendMicro Security. I have heard good things about it, so I updated it and left it alone for now. It's installed and up to date, but not activated. I can't find anything on their website about a free version, since it was pre-installed on an OEM it seems safe to assume I'll have to pay to activate it. Can someone please confirm or deny if that's the case?

    Thanks! :)

Oh, and if it's not free I don't want it. I'm not really up to speed on good firewalls for 7 though. Suggestions would be welcome. Thanks again :)

Hi Mimsy, The Trend Micro usually has a 30 day trial , UNLESS it was purchased with the system.. You can open your Trend Micro, and look at the serial number. There should also be an "expiration date" of your TM. In the console, doesn't it have a "user name" and a button to click to go to their website? If you click that, you should see your product, and what exactly you have on your system..

Trend Micro does make a good product, but if it isn't "registered" you are not protected. It has to be activated to receive the latest updates...

I would check their website, and if all else fails, click the "contact us" button, fill out the form, and they will get back to you. :)

It did not have a username or an expiration date. :( However, I noticed that the words "not yet activated" under Subscription Status were a hyperlink. I clicked on it, and came to a screen that showed a serial number, and asked me to please provide an email address to start my free 61 day trial. Sweet! That is way more generous that I expected! Kudos to ASUS and TrendMicro. :highfive

I put in my email and made sure to uncheck the box that gives them permission to spam me, so now I should be set for a couple of months. I have an expiration date in the console main window now -- end of April. :)

Thanks for the link! I knew about decrapifier, but I had completely forgotten about it, so thank you for the reminder. Downloading it now. :)

PCTools is a decent FW for both flavours of W7. One thing you really don't want(IMO) is if you have XpressGate on there, yes you boot up quicker for e-mail etc. but you still have to reboot to do anything worthwhile.

That works in Win7? Great! I have PCTools on my XP desktop and I really like it. When the Trendmicro trial expires I'll install PCTools then. :)

Um. Actually, I don't see a firewall portion in the TrendMicro panel/console anywhere. Maybe it doesn't have one? This must be researched!

    EDIT:
Scratch that, I found it. They call it "internet protection" instead of firewall, that's why I didn't see it earlier.

Hey Mims, That is great! 61 freebie days! :highfive Congrats! :clap
I also use PC Tools FW. Very good, and I think you will like it too.
Give it a whirl. Just leave your windows FW ON when you dl it. It will pick up all the info from your windows FW and deactivate it, and replace it. ;)
