Anyone using Trillian Messenging software on dialup.
I tried Yahoo v7 Beta and found it too much of a resource hog on my laptop.
I deleted it and replaced it with Trillian.
Trillian is a really a low resource use program and I would normally recommend it, but it slows down my access to MG forums dramatically (for some reason unknown to me).
I have to exit Trillian to get any worthwhile response time to MG forums.
Anyone else have this problem with Trillian/dialup combo?
System resources are good according to W98SE Resource meter, so lack of resources is not the problem.
Looks like I'm going to have to go back to an earlier version of Yahoo (v5 or v6) unless someone else has a better idea.

Hope you can help as I need a working, low resource using, Messenger program in W98SE. Bazza

Well, trillian is a nice tool. But, I feel it has its bandwidth issues. I've tried it with satelite internet and it slowed my connection speed to a crawl (dial up speeds ;) ). Now, that I have moved into town, I've got cable access. Trillian works great.

So, my first(maybe 2nd also) question is this:

Are you using it to connect to one chat service? Or are you using it to connect to all the services like I originally did?

Try using it with one connection only.

Thanks halo, and Area-51, for the rapid replies. I will try GAIM as I don't want to go back to yahoo if I can help it. They (Yahoo) sent me a message that I should update the version of Yahoo I was using as they were no longer going to support it. That was when I tried v7 Beta and my troubles began. Thx again guys, Bazza

I only want to use it to connect to Yahoo Messenger. Maybe there is a default I should check out in Trillian. Maybe Trillian has automatically set a default somewhere that allows access to more than one Messenger program. I will investigate further as I quite like it's interface. Bazza

Just looked at every menu default in Trillian. It was only tryiing to access Yahoo so that is OK. Have altered/deleted some other defaults so will see what difference these make, if any. Bazza

I think I now have a better setup. Trillian users check your settings as follows

Right click Trillian icon, in system tray, down by M$ clock.

Select Connections-->Click on Manage my Connections-->opens up Trillian preferences--->select (and click on) Audio.

Shift slider from "HIGH" Broadcast quality -->"LOW".

    "LOW" setting uses

Hmmm, the key word here is BETA. :)

Which means what? Testing stage. Since you were having problems, you could have sent a "bug" report to yahoo. :)

Then again, I've used alphas and beta software for quite a few years.

Thanks for the info on trillian....

    bazza,

I use Trillian 3.0 Basic on dialup, haven't had a problem with bandwidth at all. I don't think I've adjusted the audio settings at all. Not at that computer right now, if you want to compare settings. But maybe connecting at 52.0Kbps is fast enough to not notice it?
