Trillian

I have just installed Trillian Instant Messenger and just wanted to ask a few questions as I have never used an instant messenger before.

Firstly how does this thing work? I mean, have I got an addy or something I can give out or put in my MG profile?

Secondly, how do I set my AV or Spy programs to work with this? I use avast! and a2antiMalware.

Also what security issues are involved with Instant messengers?

Thanks, thats all I can think of to ask at the moment. I can learn as I go along as long as I know a few of the basics.

 

woo instant messaging? alright, step one is to get an account through every major Instant messaging service you intend to use, if you intend to use windows live messenger(AKA MSN messenger) you'll have to register with MSN, AOL will have you registering with AOL, yahoo with yahoo and so on and so forth. after that its just a matter of plugging user names and passwords into the corresponding boxes and logging in.

once you're through the initial account setup all you've got to do is add the account names of people you'd like to talk to to your contact list.

 

Right click on the icon you have selected that appears down by the time in the Notification area.

Then left click on "Trillian Prefererences".

This will show 13 icons to select from, and work your way through. Bazza

 

In 3.1, not sure which you have.

Identities & Connections > Add a new connection
It will walk you thru, you can use whatever your email addy is for MG's if it has im service.

Once connection is set up
In same window, Change > Privacy

You can allow and block users here. I have identities set-up to block all users unless on my contact list, they can send an add request tho.

Like most programs, they are as secure as you make them. I don't add anyone I don't know.

Thanks for your replies. I have just been advised to use MSN Messenger instead to learn the ropes of all this.

I will get used to how MSN works first of all then maybe download trillian in a few weeks with that experience in mind.

Don't waste your time learning MSN Messenger then Trillian, IMO.
Trillian does MSN Messenger as well as other chat programs. (see quote below).
Trillian is not that hard to learn.

I used msn for a few days and have now changed to trillian. I was just wondering if any of you guys could tell me the suffix used for AIM?

eg.

MSN is *****@hotmail.co.uk
Yahoo is *****@yahoo.com

I know bazza, seems a bit more proffesional too, none of the silly pictures etc. More minimalistic stylish sorta thing! None of the other crap im not interested in that comes with MSN.

To add to my above questions. Could anyone tell me also what an IRC is, and where to set up an account, or is it pointless.

Sorry one more thing, how do i set up my AV to work with this, I see where to put it in preferences but what do I pu there?
