How do I get rid of this? It says in the file: inst2.dll in my C:\winnt\downloaded program files
However, I don't see it there....I have all my settings to show me system files and extensions for knows types, etc.

Both Trend Micro on-line and Symantec on-line find it when I scan in safe mode, both say can not clean it.

    Win2k OpSys.
    Thanks!

Most files in the Downloaded Program Files folder are invisible using Windows Explorer. You need to delete them from the command line or use a tool like ExplorerXP

Here is how to do the command line delete if you do not want to use ExplorerXP
    - Click Start, Run, and enter cmd in the box and click OK. This opens a command prompt window.
    - Enter the following command lines each followed by the enter key
    cd C:\winnt\Downloaded Program Files\
    attrib -r -h -s inst2.dll
    del inst2.dll
    exit

Let me know if this helps.

    attrib said file not found
Del cmd said file not found
I ran trend micro again and this time found nothing.
extremely odd...this thing wouldn't have just 'decided' to back up its bags for the night...

I will keep scanning to ensure nothing present.
    Thanks!

If you are worried about other possible malware problems you can run thru our full cleaning process given below.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
Also to get you started and to reduce the size of your HJT log. Do the following:

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem, boot into normal mode and:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

oh, yeah...I have the 'Read Me first ' post as a Fav.
I always start there, hence the Trend Micro.
I have all the tools on that page + HJT and check for latest dBs 1/week, new versions ~1/month.
AdAware and Spybot had some minimal cookie stuff, but nothing special.
Will reboot and run Trend again in the a.m.
    Thanks

Couldn't run Symantec on-line virus check from the "Read me first" posting. It never brought it up. HJT seems messy too....but not sure what to make of it..

Finally got around to posting HJT Log

Had another Trojan today, but got rid of it. Identified through TrendMicro.

CAN'T run Symantec on-line scan either in safe nor normal mode. Never had the problem before, so not sure what the issue is.

Spybot returned a "BackWeb" item, but was my Kodak software updater.

Everything else was clean. Anything I should remove through HJT? You will see one 'Trusted Site' and I plan to leave that one on purpose.

I always recommend against putting anything in the Trusted Zone and it is very rare that it is even necessary.

At anyrate the below line should be fixed:
15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'http' protocol is in Trusted Zone, should be Internet Zone

Now click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.

On the page that opens, scroll down to CWShredder Service ... right click the entry, select 'Properties' and press 'Stop Service'. When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the 'Start-up Type' to 'Disabled'. Press 'OK' until you get back to Windows.

Next, run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the "None of the above, just start the program" button at the bottom of the choices. At the lower right, click on the 'Config" button, and then the Misc tools' button ... select 'Delete an NT Service" ... copy/paste the following into the box that opens, and press "OK":

    CWShredder Service

Now scan with HJT and make sure the below entry is gone:

    O23 - Service: CWShredder Service - InterMute, Inc. - C:\Program Files\InterMute\SpySubtract\CWShredder.exe

These is no reason for CWShredder to be running as a service so I wonder if this is even a valid version.

ok -all done, I've also downloaded whatever was the latest, but I only remember ever getting CWS from you guys unless updates come from another site.

Also attached is new HJT Log, in case anything else pops up at you (same named file)
    Thanks!

The O23 line did not come from us. We do not have a version that installs a SpySubtract service. We have a file that is Zipped and when you extract it, it is immediately runnable with no installation required. It runs from whatever folder you have it it. And it is not a system service.

Your log is now clean. Are you having any other problems?
