Not 2 days after you guys graciously helped me clean my computer, I clicked on a link to read an article on news and I get this trojan.keylogger again. Since I have had this before I knew how to get as much info to you as possible. I had to go into Safe Mode and run Rkill.exe in order to run malware. Then ran superantispyware, tdskiller and tried to run OTL but it will not work. All reports are below.

Malware (could not update at the time, but did do another search with malware updated and it found nothing.. the log attached is the one I did when I initially had a problem)

    TDSKiller reported nothing

    OTL does not work.

Superantispyware found some stuff as well: you can see it attached.

    Thanks guys.

What about Combofix and MGTools? :confused

Now let's use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below log:

    • C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Find attached! Everything seems to be working fine, but my OTL.exe is still not working. It keeps saying an error and then makes me send a report to Windows.

    Any suggestions?

Your logs are clean. I don't know why OTL is not working for you. You can try re-downloading it:

    Download OTL to your desktop.

    • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
    • Vista and Windows 7 users Right-click OTL and choose Run as Administrator)
    • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
    • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
    • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

Attach both of these logs into your next reply.

You don't need to attach the logs. Just let me know if it works.

Still a little bit more to do yet.

This machine is not in normal start up. You need to use MSCONFIG to put it back into normal start up mode. Anything else is used primarily for trouble-shooting and diagnostic purposes.

You are storing files like shown below:

They should not all be cluttering up the program files folder!! Put them into a folder of their own to neaten up. :)

    Uninstall the below.
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 20
    • Conduit Engine
    • Ask Toolbar

    What is this file?

    • c:\windows\system32\usrvoica9.dll

Could you please get this: usrvoica9.dll into a zipped file and attach it for me in your next post? To do this, see the below:

Please go to start > Run and paste in the following:
    log retrievable @ C:\collect.zip

    Delete these files:

    • C:\Documents and Settings\Debbie\Application Data\mlog
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Debbie\Application Data\rtmfm.log
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Debbie\Application Data\rtw546i5k.log
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Debbie\Application Data\ylog

Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

Kesterel13!: wow thanks for all of this! Please find attached the logs you requested. I was not able to uninstall the ASK toolbar or at least I wasn't sure where to look other than add/remove programs. FYI.

Please go to virustotal and upload the following files for analysis, and let me know the results.
    c:\windows\system32\usrvoica9.dll

I went to that site and browsed for the file. Once I hit upload, it loaded for a few seconds and then there was nothing. So I don't know what to give you.

It does not contain what I wanted ;) In fact I do not think it contains anything.

I tried following these instructions again and now it won't let me upload the attachment because I "already did" it says. So what would you like me to do now!?

  15. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Change the name of the file to c:\windows\system32\usrvoica9.dll.old. Now see if anything doesn't work. If every thing is working properly, you can then go back and delete the whole file.

  16. Joey Jiggles

Tim: it said access denied when I tried to rename it.

Right click file > send to > compressed folder! :) Try that please.

  18. Joey Jiggles

    Joey Jiggles Corporal

Ahh! I did what you said (and the computer wasn't too happy about it saying it was forbidden) but it did create a zip file and I tried to attach it. It again said that I already uploaded it. I even tried changing the name of the .zip to something completely different about 4 different ways and it still won't let me. It picks up that it is the same file.

    Any other suggestions?

If the file size and hashes are the same, the forum software will not accept it.

Can you try copying the file c:\windows\system32\usrvoica9.dll to your Desktop (right-click it, select Copy then switch to your Desktop, select an empty area, right-click and select Paste). If that's successful, can you the zip the file, or right-click it and select Send to > Compressed folder and attach the resulting zip please?

  20. Joey Jiggles

    Joey Jiggles Corporal

Satrow: I tried that as well. It would not let me copy it to the desktop. Here is what is said -- "Cannot copy usrvoica9: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or right-protected and that the file is not currently in use."

Ok, I think I might have discovered the reason that this file is installed, even though your hardware appears not to need it, I'm awaiting further confirmation on that.

    Do you connect via AOL?

According to my reading of your logs (which may not be 100% accurate), you should have the Ask Toolbar listed in your Add/Remove programs list, can you double-check that and uninstall it if you find it please?

  22. Joey Jiggles

    Joey Jiggles Corporal

Satrow: I believe Kestrel asked the same thing earlier. I do not have the Ask Toolbar in add/remove programs (I checked again just in case) and I never use AOL.

  23. satrow

    satrow Major Geek Extraordinaire

I know she did ;) I wanted a double-check after I'd read the logs. Do you have any kind of helpdesk/support software installed?

If you revisit the Add/Remove list, can you list any software that was installed on Jun 30 2011?

On the same day (it wasn't so long ago ;)) did you install any new hardware or update any existing or problematic hardware/drivers?

  24. Joey Jiggles

    Joey Jiggles Corporal

Satrow: I'm not sure if I have any help/support software installed. Would you be able to tell me where to look?

Also, I checked the add/remove programs again. The only option I saw was "date last used", some could be categorized that way and some couldn't. I have been doing so much to get this computer back to normal I can't remember what I have downloaded anymore. I really haven't downloaded any software at all unless I was told by you guys.

Ok, a different tack ;), do you, or any other user, use this computer over dialup? For sending/receiving faxes or anything else?

    • Click Start.
    • Click Run.
    • Type cmd or command and press enter.
    • Copy and paste the below and press enter.

    Code:
    [B]attrib -R -A -S -H "C:\Windows\System32\usrvoica9.dll" [/B]

Now are you able to zip up the file for us?

  27. Joey Jiggles

    Joey Jiggles Corporal

Satrow: no one else uses this computer and we do not use it for dial up or any other purposes. It is directly connected with an ethernet cable.

Kestrel: I tried that and it said in the cmd box: Access denied C:\windows\system32\usrvoica9.dll

Guys you will never believe this..

so Kestrel, I followed all of your instructions. I started a restore point, downloaded that program and ran it. It did what it had to do and closed. I then restarted my computer.

    Here is the crazy part...

I go to "C:\Windows\System32\usrvoica9.dll" and as soon as I click on it to try and compress it my Avira sounds and shoots up a message saying "Found trojan.vun virus in usrvoica9.dll.. removing now". So it is now deleted I guess.

My mouth dropped haha. Seems like you guys were on to something! :major

    What shall we do now?

PS- I thought maybe my OTL would work but it still doesn't.

  30. Kestrel13!

Kestrel13! Super Malware Fighter - Major Dilemma Staff Member

Oh well, that ends that then. :-D

Now do not keep worrying about OTL not running. Some people find MGTools will not run so have to switch to OTL instead. It does not always mean malware is present just because one of the tools does not run. Your logs look good now there is just a bit left to tidy up so I shall find what needs doing and post up shortly.

    Uninstall the below.
    • Ask Toolbar
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 20
    • Conduit engine

    Delete these files.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Debbie\Application Data\rtmfm.log
    C:\Documents and Settings\Debbie\Application Data\ylog
    C:\Documents and Settings\Debbie\Application Data\rtw546i5k.log
    C:\Documents and Settings\Debbie\Application Data\mlog
    c:\gjmohwey.txt

Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required (If we renamed it please rename it back to Combofix.exe.
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Ok, well I have done everything you told me. OTL still does not work but I guess I will just have to get over that haha.
