Trouble after malware

I've followed your read first directions for malware detection and removal and so far that seems to have solved the majority of my problems with random pop ups and links, but I am still having trouble with my sound card. Apparently I had a trojan horse that (God willing) has been removed, but my speakers are no longer working - all system notification sounds are coming from my tower. When I go to device manager to check the drivers, everything looks fine. Can I get a little help, please? Thank you!

What sound card do you have?

You can try resetting the sound card/drivers by:

    Shutdown the computer
Remove the sound card from the tower
Boot into Windows, and uninstall any sound card software
    Shutdown the computer again
Re-seat the sound card into the slot
Boot into Windows again, let it detect the "new" device and install the sound card drivers/software again

Alright, I turned off the computer and popped it open to take the sound card out, but it's built into the board - I can't remove it.

And on a side note, I'm starting to wonder if I did fix my virus/malware problem. I was having trouble using IE, so I downloaded Google Chrome and it's been fine. I tried to go to Dell's website to reload the sound drivers and it told me to use IE instead of Google so I opened IE and it wouldn't load the pages for me again. It seems IE has been damaged. (Not that I particularly care, I'm using chrome now, but if the virus isn't gone, I need to fix it before it affects other things.) I also notice trouble with my DSL when I turn on the computer. I don't know if that's possible, but it works for a half a second when I turn the machine on and then quits. When the machine was off, I had internet connection. It may just be crappy Verizon, though.

. . . I disconnected the ethernet cable to my desktop and sure enough, internet is working just fine now.

    Audio trouble

Recently I had a virus on my pc. I don't know if that had anything to do with it, but at the same time, my onboard audio seemed to have gone out. I just got a new pci sound card today, installed it, and I still have no sound coming out of the speakers. I tried changing slots, toggling the onboard audio on and off . . . when I go into sounds and audio devices from the control panel, it tells me that there are no default devices and it's grayed out, so I can't choose one. Can someone please steer me in the right direction?

I have a Dell Dimension B110 running Windows XP.

    Thanks!

    Hi

Your best course of action would be while you had completed the Read Me guide, was to start a thread in the malware forum and attach the logs, just in case some left over malware files are causing your issue, we could go around in circles chasing a driver issue if malware is still on the PC

So re-follow the below and start a thread in malware area of the forum and when given the all clear repost here to say so and we can then try and fix your audio issues.

I thought I had taken care of everything when I finished with that process originally and it was just a bad sound card, but I'm redoing it and will post it all. Thanks. :-o

    Hi

Just a precaution and get one of the malware experts to review your logs and just make sure as many malwares these days hide themslves very well and wouldnt want a stray file or two causing this issue.

What Service Pack is your XP at as its important for the driver fixes?

But once you get an all clear, then the following should hope fully get you going..... but do wait, as wouldnt want to hit a snag due to malware files still on the PC as it could be a pain to re-go over everything,

First install the Chipset driver from HERE and reboot(do reboot as its important), then depending on the Service Pack you have for XP we have one of two ways to go.

    1. If you have Service Pack 3 installed already, just install the Audio driver from HERE
    2. If you dont have Service Pack 3 installed then install the Microsoft UAA Driver from HERE then install the Audio from HERE

    Reboot and test Audio

For reference your PCs drivers at Dell are HERE

Umm . . . how long should I wait for someone to respond to that thread before I assume no one's going to? I'm sure it takes a while for them to review all those logs, but I don't know if anyone's even noticed that it's there. :confused

I do have SP3, and I've tried reinstalling both of those drivers multiple times, to no avail. I still have no sound.
