Mkay, one final stab at this!

I play an MMORPG (final fantasy XI) - It disconnected me a little over 2 weeks ago and I haven't been able to connect since. I keep recieving an error code regarding "Network connection / devices"

Now, I contact my ISP (AOL) - and have been told "there is no solution" and "there is no problem" - This was AFTER being told by game support "If your with AOL we have problems with them alot"

Have tried forwarding ports and using a static IP and done what AOL instructed with MTU size n all the boring stuff. The game support says i'm losing connection to the server on certain IP.

Really, i'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas I could try see if that helps me any.. Hoping to leave AOL soon!

If it helps any.. I used portforward port checker and each time returned a result "Cannot ping router" - How do I fix this?

    Welcome to Majorgeeks :)

Bypass AOL by using OpenDNS to route your data across the 'net?

I'll give it a stab. I can browse the inernet just fine. Having no problems at all with anything else, just the game! :(

After 5 or 6 emails I got a response from AOL that "This may be due to a possible network error serverside" - though I fear it's just to shut me up complaining.

Seems like you have every right to complain.

The "cannot ping router" reads like ICMP or ping is blocked in the router for the local network or globally, you should access your router and set it to allow or respond to ICMP on your LAN.

Which AOL (country?) are you with and what make/model router?

    AOL UK. Netgear DG834G (v3)

would the inability to ping router effect me connecting to the game at all? I'm not great with this sorta thing. Like I say, I can browse everything, the game support says i'm timing out on certain IP.. that sound like an issue with AOL?

Almost tempted to call and try cancelling my contract..

Here's Kitz's AOL router setup, you can try it that way.

My way would be similar but I'd set (and point the PC to) the router as default gateway, making the router hold the AOL connection open whilst negating the need for any of the AOL software to be running on a connected computer.

Having ping blocked shouldn't stop you being able to play the game (though, in some cases, it might), it will stop you being able to use normal troubleshooting methods.

Hmm, how about you reset the router to defaults (10 seconds or so of pressure on the reset switch ) and set it up again by hand, it might fix the problem.

Also tried that, no dice. Did it accidentally if i'm honest, but yeah.. Had to reset all settings and didn't help.

In that case, I think you need to find someone at AOL UK (are they still owned by Carphone Warehouse?) to do some troubleshooting on your behalf.

Alternatively, there are a few ISPs in the UK who know about gaming ;)

At present i'm looking at Plusnet, SkyBroadband and Virgin Media.. Heard bad things about Sky.. and Plusnet is a Yorkshire company.. So some Bias from me there haha ^_^

don't suppose you have any recommendations? (If your British of course)

Wish I could get someone from AOL to do some Troubleshooting.. but all I get is a quick "Let me test your router... it's fine" and that's the end.. No matter how much I emphasise it's not fine. I'm always given the final "There is no solution" answer.
