I am having a problem installing a program that was once installed. It gives me an error a somewhat dizzying path and the key. I found the key and tried to delete it but no success(cannot be deleted. error while deleting.) I have UAC turned off working from an administrator account. Windows Vista 64bit SP2

I'm sorry but non-malware issues with Windows should be posted in the Software Forum. I'm moving this thread there.

Can you provide more details or a screenshot?

Kinda thought that, chaslang, when I posted here but wasn't positive. TY for getting it to the correct place.

Not certain if this is the shot you wanted or the installation shot. I included both.

Your installer is trying to place something into the registry under an UNKNOWN key.

Are you installing as an Administrator user?

Yes. All UAC are off and the user account has full administrative privileges. The full path to the key is...Local Machine\Software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\installer\userdata\s-1-5-18\components\(key)...That is where I found the key. I don't really understand the unknown part. I did find 2 key folders labeled unknown but not with that key in it or any subfolder.

@plodr that is basically whot I did. Initially I had this in the virus/malware forum and thought that something might help me say scram. I have also used the windows cleanup utility, same results. I mean I can see the registry folder but can't delete it so another can be installed. Although, I am confoosed about the location it is relating during installation (UNKNoWN.)

Does it seem reasonable to say that a trusted program scripted application would not have a folder in the registry labeled unknown? That wording seems almost tasteless but maybe someone can make heads of it.

UNKNOWN is not a top-level registry key that should exist. Nor should any installer try to use it.

I do not know why this is happening; either something is wrong somewhere on your system, or the installer is making a mistake. At this point it may be best to contact support of that software maker.
