Tried installing Sun Java and can not get it to verify installation. Tried everything using their help and would like ot try you guys. You've helped before with great success, let's try again please.

I'm running Windows XP Home SP2.

What browser are you using? Internet Explorer, Netscape, Firefox, Opera, etc?

Internet Explorer 6. Tried installing and configuring as directed from Sun, but will not verify installation. There is a site I use for weather radar, that is not showing the loop without java, it use to work before, not sure when it quit.
    Thanks for your help.

Is this the only desktop that will not run Sun Java. Still cannot get it going. Any other suggestions?

Did you remove your previous java and install the java which was recommended?

Several times. Checked after uninstall, as instructed by Sun, and found nothing left. Thanks again for all you help. I keep thinking I'm not doing something right, but everything is there, just doesn't work. I keep thinking I've done something, but nothing comes to mind.

Under Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/Java do you have Sun Java checked

  10. gasman87

    gasman87 Private E-2

Yes I do, even rechecked it before answering.

Go to Start/Control Panel/Click on Java icon/then hit about tab what version are you running?
Next go to Advanced/<APPLET tag support>is Internet Explorer checked?

  12. gasman87

Version 1.5.0 and yes IE checked. Searching back to past problems, I believe I removed MSJVM from my machine, but not sure if the problem started then.
Thanks again for your help, I've learned a lot.

I used the uninstall found on Major Geek, or I thought I did. Or maybe I still have it? How can I tell for sure?

    Proper way to uninstall
    1. From the Start menu, select Run.
    2. Enter the command

    RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall

    to start the uninstall process
    3. Click Yes to the confirmation, then select Reboot.
    4. After the machine restarts, delete the following items:
    * the \%systemroot%\java folder
    * java.pnf from the \%systemroot%\inf folder
    * jview.exe and wjview.exe from the \%systemroot%\system32 folder
    * The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM registry subkey
    * The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_VM registry subkey (to remove the Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) options)

    Okay, you have java installed.

Not to replace IE, but have you tried this site under a different browser? Like Firefox, Opera?

If it works in firefox, then we know that it is an IE issue, which narrows things down quite a bit.

clarification: NO, i'm not suggesting ditching IE for Firefox........

Downloaded Firefox to try per theefool suggestion and the weather radar site that I used is working fine under Firefox. I still would like to use the IE site with Sun Java. I can install per your instructions to try. Thanks again for all you help and suggestions. To jujet84, I think Sun gave up on me, that's why I came in here for help. Everyone did a great job clearing up my son's computer awhile back, I figured someone would have an answer.

Another thought, I may have started having problems using Sun after uninstalling the older version of Java when upgrading. Could that started the problem?

Checking on Sun web site and posible problem could be proxy configuration problem. How can I get the information on getting proxy info? Getting the red X when trying to verify installation. I'm not giving up on IE yet. Thanks again for all the help.

    Within, IE:

Click Tools, Internet Options, then select the Connections tab, then select the "Lan Settings" button. Do you have anything checked near proxy server?

To truly test this, what happens when you click START, RUN, then type in: CMD (press enter).[if 2k or xp] COMMAND [95/98/98SE/ME]

Next, when you get the the c:\documents and settings\username (yours)\ or whatever

    typie in JAVA (press enter)

    Do you get:

an error or do you get:

  36. gasman87

    gasman87 Private E-2

OK. What first? Thanks for both of your help. Jujet84, do you want me to try theefool's suggestion first or go ahead and reinstall java?

  37. gasman87

    gasman87 Private E-2

Theefool, it comes back Java not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

  38. gasman87

    gasman87 Private E-2

jujet84, downloaded from the link you suggested and that did the trick. I can now verify the installation and weather site works like before. You guys are the greatest. Now should I keep firefox as a secondary browser? IE actually downloads sites faster than firefox. What would be the advantage of keeping them both. You opinions will highly respected

  39. theefool

My suggestion, was merely a way to make sure you DO NOT have Java installed.

From reading your newest post, everything seems to work perfectly.

    Your welcome.
I'd keep FireFox and don't forget you can do alot of tweaking on both.A new beta version of FireFox will be out September 8th/05

  42. theefool

    theefool Geekified

    1.5 beta, correct?

  43. jujet84

    jujet84 Master Sergeant

    That's correct
Mozilla has announced its beta schedule for the upcoming release of Firefox 1.5, according to a posting on its developer news Web site. Beta 1 will be released on September 8, followed by a second beta on October 5.

Furthermore, the first release candidate of the browser is expected on October 28, which indicates the final version of Firefox 1.5 would likely come sometime during the month of November.

Not sure if I'll "downgrade" to that version or not. :)

Currently using the 1.8 branch.... ;)

So I've done all the things on this thread, except getting an alternative browser. When I run command, and type java I get

    Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
    (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

    C:\Documents and Settings\John O>java
    Usage: java [-options] class [args...]
    (to execute a class)
or java [-options] -jar jarfile [args...]
    (to execute a jar file)

    where options include:
-client to select the "client" VM
-server to select the "server" VM
-hotspot is a synonym for the "client" VM [deprecated]
    The default VM is client.

-cp <class search path of directories and zip/jar files>
-classpath <class search path of directories and zip/jar files>
A ; separated list of directories, JAR archives,
and ZIP archives to search for class files.
    -D<name>=<value>
    set a system property
    -verbose[:class|gc|jni]
    enable verbose output
-version print product version and exit
    -version:<value>
require the specified version to run
-showversion print product version and continue
    -jre-restrict-search | -jre-no-restrict-search
include/exclude user private JREs in the version search
-? -help print this help message
-X print help on non-standard options
    -ea[:<packagename>...|:<classname>]
    -enableassertions[:<packagename>...|:<classname>]
    enable assertions
    -da[:<packagename>...|:<classname>]
    -disableassertions[:<packagename>...|:<classname>]
    disable assertions
    -esa | -enablesystemassertions
    enable system assertions
    -dsa | -disablesystemassertions
    disable system assertions
    -agentlib:<libname>[=<options>]
    load native agent library <libname>, e.g. -agentlib:hprof
    see also, -agentlib:jdwp=help and -agentlib:hprof=help
    -agentpath:<pathname>[=<options>]
load native agent library by full pathname
    -javaagent:<jarpath>[=<options>]
load Java programming language agent, see java.lang.instrument

But I'm still not able to verify. In Internet Options under Advanced tab Java (Sun) Use JRE 1.5.0_05 for <applet> (requires restart) is checked and IE explorer is checked under the java control panel.

Any suggestions from here? Thanks for looking and especially for any help/suggestions.

If you are having trouble verifying Java, I uninstalled and downloaded from another site than Java, go to post # 34 and use that site, that's what fixed me.

Thanks gasman87, I really thought your thread was gonna be my fix and that I wouldn't have to bother anyone. I did everything you did up to where you had success, the only difference being that the alternative download didn't work for me. There must be more tweaking to be done because even after all that, I cannot successfully verify. And you're right, the helpful people on this site ROCK!

Did you uninstall Java before installing from the other site?
