Trouble on a forum, or is it my computer

I don’t rightly know where would be the proper place to ask this question. I’ve had something happen on forum I’ve been posting on & been a member of since December 2005 that puzzles me. This happened last night.

Last night on a topic I was participating in & watching, after one person made a post with a link in it to you tube, every time I click on a link to that topic in the email notification I receive when a new reply has been made, when that page gets loaded in my browser the box for making downloads pops up, that has cancel or save on it. Of course I click on cancel.

This is the name of the download, “j1nm_aWSqNs.”

I have scanned my computer with Microsoft Security Essentials, & Skybot, 4 different times & my computer comes up clean.

The owner of the board don’t seem to know what’s going on, & some members have given suggestions of downloading this or that as if they’re just taking wild guesses.

No changes has been made to my computer, I’m the only one that uses it, & I use the Chrome Browser & the only extension it has is AdBlock Plus. This computer is Windows 7 Professional.

Since I’ve had this computer I have never had this happen, & it happens only on that one topic, & I seem to be the only one it happens to.

Does anyone have an idea what’s taking place. And If you need to ask me a question about it I will try to answer you, & if this is the wrong forum for this I apologize & feel free to move it as necessary.

    Thanks,
    Jerry

    Hi Jerry

If others are not having issues, then do think its your PC, but more likely not malware but a setting, missing plugin for media etc, so some thoughts to track this down are below.

Please do in this order as its systematic and test at each stage (bulletpoint number) to see if this link works as others are getting.

    1. Is your Windows 7 Pro at Service Pack 1?
    2. Try using Internet Explorer or Firefox? does the same happen?
If it does still happen then use CCleaner and its cleaner (leave at default and change nothing, you will have to re-enter any usernames and passwords saved in the browser), the cleaner will delete temp internet files and cookies, as a file "maybe" corrupt.

    3. Do you have Java Runtime installed (yes before comments I know the issues with Java of late and that's not my concern here) if not uninstall all versions found, then install the latest HERE

Install the latest Adobe Flashplayer HERE and HERE (need separate one for Mozilla Firefox) In Chrome Flashplayer is built in so just make sure you have latest Chrome version.

and test a few browsers out again to see if this link works.

If not boot into safe mode (F8 at boot and choose Safe Mode with Networking) then see if you can open the link, this will test hopefully if a 3rd party app such as Spybot is causing this.

Thank you very much, your help led me to the problem.

Yes, when others did not have this problem, it did make me wonder.

Going through & checking for the things you asked I found something that corrected this problem.

My Chrome browser had been updated but, I checked it once again to be absolutely sure.

I clicked on 'about Google chrome.' It said I've got the latest, but needs to be restarted, so I did. After which I open up that topic that caused the download to open, & it did not open.

I fail to understand this, for I know it had been restarted, at least 4 to 6 times since this problem 1st occurred, but that's OK, I'm just happy its fixed!

And thank you once again, going though the questions you had asked so that I could answer them led me to the problem & the cure, & I appreciate your help very much.

    Thank you,
    Jerry
