Just used the .NET framework removal tool (XP SP3), since .NET was installed in recent updates, and I had no use for it. Now most apps (Office, Acrobat, BB Desktop Mgr) won't load, and System Restore isn't able to restore to an earlier point. Is there any way for me to fix this, short of complete reinstall? Ugh! Trying not to despair!
    Thanks.

Not sure why .NET has garnered the disdain I see for it around the net. It's actually a major upgrade to XP, imo, and it's actually one of the things that never crashes. That said, if you don't need it, you don't need it, but I guess these apps you are having difficulty opening depend on it being there...

Hey DLR, I'm not sure about the others, but if I remember correctly, Office 2007 requires .NET Framework. If anyone knows this for sure, please let me know.

To DLR: You might try using the Microsoft Windows Restore tool; picking a Windows Restore Point which precedes the use of the .NET Framework Removal Tool.

Side Note to AtlBo Re: Not sure why .NET has garnered the disdain I see for it around the net. It is also somewhat of a mystery to me as well.

The only thing I can see out there on the Internet that makes any sense to me is that after Win XP users install .Net Framework; every single Microsoft Update after that takes WAY longer to complete.

It makes absolutely no sense to me to remove it; however because MANY applications require it and particularly considering the numerous problems which said removal can cause in the future.

Side Note to Nick T: I tried to get an "official" Microsoft website link for you; however the MS site was frozen unfortunately. However, I do know for sure that Microsoft Office 2007, and most (especially newer) applications; which are currently provided by Microsoft, require the .NET framework, and will almost always offer to install it for you automatically; if the new software's installer detects that the user does NOT currently have it installed.

A little background regarding Microsoft .NET which is a particular "platform" which is designed and aimed at helping developers create new applications specifically for the Windows operating system. The Microsoft .NET Framework contains the required libraries (files) which are necessary in order to run a large and ever growing number of applications.

If you are referring to Microsoft Update, then those versions of .NET were already installed on your computer.
    The updates were security patches.

I know you have seen several versions installed on your computer, and they all have gotten several updates.
Although you do not use them directly, you were most likely using some or all of them through the software that you use.

    A good explanation here:
What is the .NET Framework, and do I need all these versions?
From a former member of the Microsoft .NET Framework development team:
Do I need still need older versions of the .NET Framework on my system after installing .NET Framework 3.5 SP1?

XP shipped with no version of .NET.
If you install something and it needs it, it will complain.
I currently have one XP computer with Office 2007 (Home and Student edition) that has .NET2 and SP1 for .NET 2 installed. Nothing higher than that.

Try installing .NET 2 and see if that fixes the issue.

I don't run Acrobat nor BB Desktop Mgr so won't comment on what version of .NET might be needed to run them.

Trying to be more helpful than explaining why you should not remove .NET installations.

There are a few options to try before a complete reinstall (of Windows ?).

First, reinstall the affected software. The install package will either contain all requirements or should tell you which
version of .NET Framework is needed.

In checking System Requirements for some of the software you mentioned, I found the following:

I see no mention of .NET Framework here.
System requirements: Acrobat family of products

The following lists .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 as a requirement.
System Requirements: BlackBerry Desktop Software v7.1

    Also here:
    System requirements for Office 2013

If you reinstall that software, it should tell you what is needed.

The following is just for reference. I am not advising that you install this.

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service pack 1 (Full Package)
Make a new System Restore point before making any system changes.
If you have any other backup strategies in place, use them also.

    Hope this helps.
