I recently had to format my brother's computer due to malware problems. I thought I'd pretty much got everything up and running, until...My brother tried to play FFXI on his laptop last night and apparently he's getting a blue-screen error message anytime between immediately after he starts playing up to an hour or so into the game. Here's the message:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
The problem seems to be caused by the following file: igxpdx32.dll
    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

    Technical information:
    *** Stop: 0x00000050 (0xE297F104, 0X00000000, 0XBF385265, 0X00000001)
    *** IGXPDX32.DLL - Address BF385265 Base at BF1D800, Datestamp 00000000

From what I can gather so far, this is either (or both) the chipset driver or the graphics driver. I'm pretty sure I have the correct version of both, since I got them off the model-specific Dell site.

I'm also getting a double listing of my processor and chipset under Device Manager (don't know if this makes any difference), like so:

I've tried uninstalling the chipset and graphics drivers in safe mode, then reinstalling...but perhaps I did this incorrectly. I also made sure to update DirectX.

I'm using a Dell Inspiron E1505 with Windows XP Home.

Any suggestions to get my brother up and going?

I'm not totally sure on the processor, but going by my Device Manager and the fact that both our processors are dual cores, I believe your processor entry is OK.
(Mine has always showed two since day 1) and (My wife has a new quad core and there are 4 entries for processor.)

BUT your Display entry should not have two of the same listing. That may be your problem.
Check to see if both show that they are working properly, right click and chose Properties.
If they are both working properly, uninstall one, and see if your problem disappears.
(An alternative would be to uninstall both and re-download the Intel graphics driver again, install it and check to make sure you have only one entry, just in case one has a flawed igxpdx32.dll but not showing that way in the Device Manager)

Also, those wouldn't be your chipset driver. It should be located in the System section. I think what you're seeing is the Intel Graphics controller.

If the problem returns, uninstall the Intel driver and reboot to let Windows install it's Display driver.
Again try it out and see if the problem returns.

Thanks for the note about processors...it occurred to me later that the processor may be dual core. My own laptop is old and I'm just used to seeing one.

    Onto the real problem...

I am unable to uninstall the Display Adapters in safe mode...I get this error message:
Failed to uninstall device. The device may be required to boot up the computer.

The only way I've found to uninstall the Display Adapters (and this will uninstall both...I can't uninstall just one) is to uninstall the entry Mobile Intel(R) 955XM/945GM/PM/GMS/940ML Express Processor to DRAM Controller -- 27A0 under System Devices.

If I disable one of the Display Adapters and restart, both of them disappear and I have to reinstall. Then, when I reinstall, I end up with the same problem of two Display Adapters. I tried to let Windows install the driver on it's own, but it can't find the right one.

I'm gonna download the graphics driver directly from Intel, just in case there's something wrong with the one I got from Dell that's causing this problem.

You may be able to unistall the graphics driver by disabling the two entries, rebooting, then uninstalling. Or by going to the Dell driver folder and deleting it, if all else fails.

Disabling, uninstalling, and reinstalling had no effect...I'm still getting the double listing of Display Adapters and the BSOD error when my bro plays FFXI...the strange thing is that it varies as to when the error occurs...sometimes it happens immediately after logging on, last night he played two hours before getting it.

    ...So...anymore suggestions?

How much hard drive space do you have available? If you have a nearly full HDD, that can lead to problems as the game eats up space while playing.
Other than that I am out of suggestions.

Nah, the hard drive is basically clean (except for all the space taken up by FFXI!)...I have about 70 gigs left...

I really appreciate your help...I'm trying to get Dell to help me, but so far no luck :(

If you think of anything else or come across anything that might help, let me know!
