I'm having major problems with IE 6 and can't seem to get it fixed. The problem is that a page will begin to open and then will take about 3 minutes to complete. I am running Windows Xp Sp2. IE 6 is now a core component and is no longer listed in the Add/Remove dialog so you can not run a repair operation.

I read that by changing the "Installed" bit for IE 6 in the registry, from "1" to "0",you would no longer recieve the "A newer version of IE 6 is installed, you can not install this version." and you could reinstall IE 6. I changed the bit from "1" to "0", but I still get the denial dialog and am prevented from reinstalling.

Does any one have any suggestions for fixing the browser short of reinstalling Windows? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I almost forgot, I ran XP's System Restore for several different Restore points but this had no effect. I also ran XP's System File Check, but File Check did not recognize any corrupt files.

    Please Help

Are you saying that it takes IE 3 mins to startup? Or 3 mins to load a web page?

3 minutes to load a web page. I have Cable broad band and normally takes less than 3 or 4 seconds to load pages.

Please disregard. I think I have to problem solved. I opened "Spyware Blaster" undid the settings for IE and rebooted and IE now appears to be working correctly. Something went wrong when I entered the last updates.

  5. Heres an idea:
Try doing sfc /scannow. That will check your files for errors as well as bring your internet explorer back to an original config so your internet explorer will be at an out-of-the-box configuration. Only thing is that all hotfix updates will need to be reinstalled. But once you did that try to update in that version of ie and if it works install your updates that need be installed then try installing ie6 like it was before and try updateing again. It is known for that to stop up like that but if you give it a few minutes it comes out. For some reason ie seems to hang when you do a windows update for some reason because i remember my ie6 doing the same when i had winxpsp2. try the sfc /scannow and see if that helps. If you dont know how to do it im sure someone else will come in here and tell you if im not here first.
    lemme know if this helps
