Hello I need to install .NET Redistributable to use some programs. In my Add/Remove program list I can see the following: Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB928366) Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 1 Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 but there is no .NET ver 2.0. I believe unavailability of this is creating problem as ver 2.0 is necessary to run these programs. I tried to download dotnetfix.exe from MS Download Center but whenever I try to install this package, I get an error related with incompatibility with previously installed version/ component and it says that installation failed. I am using a 32 bit XP with SP2. Could some one please help me out? Thank you.

    Hi

Issue could be in that you already have .Net2.0 ( plus its SP1 update ) in your list of add/removes, hence the message of incompatability as your version installed is newer than the one you downloaded.
Try uninstalling that one and then reinstall the .Net2.0 Framework Redist.

The fair majority of applications should work under other .Net packages, as they are ment to be backwards compatible, so what application is it thats not working?

Also make sure your Windows OS is fully upto date as you maybe missing the Windows Installer 3.1 update, which may help installs.

    Hello

    Thank you for your response

If you look in the list, there is no .NET version 2 in the list but .NET version 2.0 SP1, are these two same?

Anyway, my OS is up to date as I regularly update it through integrated update module with XP, except SP3 which I'm not yet sure of (whether to install or not).

I tried to uninstall .NET version 2.0 SP1 but I got an error that there are other programs which depend on this program, hence it can not be uninstalled. :?:

The program I am having trouble with MeGUI, it is a free but excellent program which I have used earlier, but lately it is not starting and I am getting an error related with .NET. Here is a screen shot in case you are interested:

Ok, I tried to follow the steps detailed in the link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/923100, but the trouble now is- .NET framework installations are not completing at all. It is stopping at a stage with a progress bar and Time Remaining 0 sec.

I have left the PC at that stage for over an hour but the installations did not complete, neither was there any error message. :(

    What should I do next?

    Hi

Yes .Net2.0 SP1 is update service pack to .Net2.0, Seems the majority of your .Net is corrupted and last time I ran into issues with .Net was during a beta test on .Net2.0 and the best way I found to correct this was form following Aaron Stebner's advice and later a tool he developed to fully remove all .Net components so you could start again and install fresh.

DO follow the advice he posts, in try and remove all .Net from Add/Remove

    Main blog site and info
    http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/05/30/611355.aspx

    The link to the tool.
    http://astebner.sts.winisp.net/Tools/dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip

Once run the tool, use something like CCleaner to remove any left over temps ( Cleaner tool ) and orphaned registry components ( registry tool )

    Thanks for your reply Halo

But unfortunately I seem to be no where near to the end of my troubles with .NET. :(

I have followed everything in the page you have given to the best of my understanding but the problem is that the installer simply stops at a certain point. Please find the attached screen shot for clarification. I have left it on its own for a long time but that did not solve the problem at all.

I used the .NET Cleanup tool available at the link you have posted above. I have also used the latest version of CCleaner to clean the registry too. Even in my desperation I tried the Safe Mode too.

    Please help :(

    Thank you.

    Hi

Just noticed that my link to Aaron's troubleshooting guide needs updating the uninstaller tool is the same version but he has a more comprehensive set of instructions for getting .Net installed here http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2008/03/07/8108332.aspx

I would also if you have Spybot S&D installed uninstall it as it can block installers that need registry access, actually disable all your security software, mainly firewall and Antivirus, while installing and before installing make sure you run CCleaners cleaner to remove any old installer temps from the temp folders.

If the installer hangs, can you hit CTRL_ALT-DEL and see if any processes are taking up most of the CPU % say over 50%+ ( dont worry about System Idle as that is normally at 90%+ ), if any are what are they?

Thanks for your help, but I have reinstalled my OS after a clean format. Though I am yet to install .net 3 and 3.5...and I'm not sure whether I'm at all going to install those... :?:
