Hello! I'm trying to set up a wireless router (Netgear wgr614 v9). I have Vista on the laptop I'm trying to set it up with. When I plug my modem directly into the computer, it connects to the internet just fine. When I plug the modem into the router, and the router into the computer, it also works fine. The connection problems begin when I unplug the router from the computer. It simply will not work wirelessly.

The router's mac address is set to the address of the computer. Channel is set to Auto. Mode is set to B ang G. Security is set to wpa-psk [tkip] + wpa2-psk [aes]. That is all I have changed as far as settings go.

I'm very inexperienced when it comes to setting up network stuff, so please elaborate on anything the common non-geek wouldn't know.:p Thank you!

The first thing I would do is to reset the router. On the back of it, there should be a small hole into which you can stick a straightened out paper clip or the tip of a pen. Hold it in for 20-30 seconds. This should set the router back to factory defaults. I think you should have all the security on it (like WPA/WEP) disabled for now. Once you get connected, you can then enable it. Anyway- after you release the reset button on the router, restart the PC. While it is shutting down and restarting, power cycle the router and modem by pulling out the power plugs for 5 or 10 seconds, then plug 'em back in while the PC is still restarting. Once you get to the desktop, down by the clock will be the little network icon. Double check and be sure that the wifi adapter on the laptop is enabled (many laptops have a switch or hotkey to turn the wifi on/off). Right click the little network icon by the clock and select "connect to network". You should be presented with a list of wireless networks. Your router should be listed, and you may have others listed too (neighbors, roommates, etc). Select your router and click Connect. You may get a warning saying the router is 'unsecured'. Select "connect anyway" and then save the network and check the box for "connect automatically". That should do it. Once this is done, and you're surfing via wifi, you can then go in and configure the WPA/WEP security and passkeys. I have connected dozens of PC wirelessly and NEVER had to mess with MAC addresses, so these should be left alone.

Thank you for your help! The problem has been resolved. I have included my

steps to making it work, just incase someone else is looking for info on how

to fix the same problem :)

I did what DLB said to do, and then unplugged my computer from the router. it

worked, but then it said I had Local Only. When I clicked Diagnose, it said:

The network adapter "Wireless Network Connection" does not have a valid IP

    configuration.

I clicked on the option: Change the settings for the network adapter

"Wireless Network Connection". It told me to open network connections, veiw

properties, and set Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) or Internet

Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) to obtain IP and DNS settings automatically.

Then I was online wirelessly with local and internet, but I have no password

or name for my router. So I plugged my router in, and went to its webpage. It

asked if I wanted to configure the router myself, and I said yes. Under

wireless settings, I selected WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES] for my

security, and set a password. I clicked Apply, and unplugged my computer from

    the router.

Now it tells me The Settings saved on this computer for the network do not

match the requirements of the network. Diagnosis for this problem told me:

    Incorrect security type.

I clicked the option to view wireless security settings to verify that the

correct security type is selected. I chose WPA2-Personal with AES encryption,

and typed in my password. Windows Network Diagnostics said the problem was

    resolved.
