I have no operating system on my computer and I tried installing Windows 10 from an ISO DVD but I get an error message that says " insert system disk" and it won't boot from the DVD. In the Bios setup utility the boot order menu shows garbled text for the name of my DVD drive- sometimes it's the correct name and sometimes it doesn't show up at all. This computer was custom built so I can't contact a manufacturer for help. Any ideas on solving this problem?

Try resetting the BIOS to Default Settings.
Save, but don't exit. Check if the DVD drive is still the first boot device. If not, make the change, and then Save and Exit.

How was this disk created? An ISO has to be burned to DVD using burning software. Just copying an ISO to the disk doesn't work.

With the sometimes garbled name of your optical drive, it could be a defective chip on the optical drive's pc board. Do you have another computer you could test the DVD in? If it works (boots, etc) on the other computer, you may need to replace the optical drive in your custom build.

I tried that but was still receiving the same error message. Thanks anyway.

It was created using the media creation tool downloaded from the Microsoft web site.

I used the same disk on another computer and it successfully installed Windows 10. I must need to replace the drive as you suggested. Thanks.

Before you do that, check the CMOS battery. It's a CR2032 rated at 3V.

I had a similar issue with the garbled drive name but, mine occurred because the drive was accidentally knocked off of my kitchen table on to the floor (about 32 inches) and screwed things up on the drive. So, I had to replace it.

    Hi

I would try if your PC allows boot from USB to stick convert the ISO to USB using the Windows ISO app and do what was mentioned above in the BIOS but set it to 1st boot device as USB and reboot with USB pen plugged in, a 4GB USB pen should be enough as thats what I use.
