In the process of finding info on doing a clean os install, I found this statement:

"Unfortunately, it is a fact of life that in order to keep your Windows computer performing at its maximum potential, you must periodically do a clean install. For the average 'power user' this is about once or twice a year."

This came as a surprise to me. What do you think?

    I disagree

I have had my box for about four years now and it still runs quite effeciently. I do weekly maintainance on it (scandisc, disc clean-up, defrag, etc). Plus, since coming to MG, I have installed proggies that keep the cooties out, as well as replaced the resource hogs with free programs that slim down load up etc, and gives me more resources to operate better. Cross my fingers, I have never had to do a re-install. Based on that, from my own experience, I have to disagree. :)

BTW, my computer runs about 12 hours daily.

I've never heard that(but then I'm not really a geek)

Like Boccemon I do my maintenance at least weekly. And I followed Black Vipers tips on reducing unnecessary services. I think if you keep on top of things you should never have to reinstall the OS. XP anyway.

Heard that before THE KEY HERE IS AVERAGE 'POWER USER'
I'd have to say average user does not know how to maintain a clean and efficiant problem free PC
Its getting tuffer with all virus worms and bugs surfing around the internet.
Everyone has some type of problem sooner or lattor.
    Heck windows isnt perfect either!

If it aint broke dont fix it!
If it dont fit? Force it.
    If it brakes? Replace it.

And then there is Geeks and Tweeks.
Why do they build it cause they can!
Why did they Tweek it cause they can!
Why did they do clean install?
    Cause they F##k it UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    That's My Opinion!

yes , and no , i am a power user , and also an overclocker ,pushing to tha extreme , in some cases ..
But with good .reg cleaning software , virii , and spyware software ,and a knowledge of Operating system environments . I have been running the same XP system for 2 years ,,
Also do regular backups using Drive Image 2002..Just in case , Have had to use it , Maybe a couple 'a times tho...

Good house keeping is a must .. but sometimes ,, -well ,unfortunately a fresh install is inevitable..
..Practicing good housekeeping , can prolong reinstalling..
    Cheers.....

I was under the impression that the end user will make you have problems eventually, not avoiding formatting/reinstalling.

I reinstall when I deem fit. Its not very often. Sometimes I get bored. Sometimes its easier than uninstalling xx number of apps.

I've never had an error I couldn't fix or couldn't trace back to my own screw up, however. Windows has never 'magically' croaked on me.
