Trying Not To Re-Format!

I've been working for a week to fix my brother's laptop, under the assumption that it had a malware problem. However, after a few unsuccessful rounds with "chaslang" (who was extremely knowledgeable and helpful :)) in the Malware Removal forum, "chaslang" suggested that I try posting in the Software forum...so here I am.

    This is my old thread.

As I said in that thread, Normal mode is pretty much shot--I can run very few programs, can install/uninstall no programs, and have pretty much not found a way to fix it. Safe mode's a little better, but still hasn't been able to pull me through.

If there's way to get this fixed without formatting, I would really appreciate it (and so would my brother!).

    Thanks!

i didn't notice (in this thread, or the other), what is your os (ie - xp, vista). you could try and create another acct, and see if that acct works better (doh, just noticed that you already tried that)? my guess is that it's still gonna be buggered up. i recently put my nephew's laptop thru the malware forum, and it was deemed clean. however, certain things were missing (not selectable), and it was sluggish. i wound up doing a fresh install (i know you don't want to - but, probably your best option), and all is good now. g/l, sos

edit - do you have ccleaner installed? can you show us your startup entries (ccleaner --> tools --> startup)?

Sorry for the wait...My brother decided he just wanted me to stop messing around and re-format...

So now I've finished my re-format and gotten everything pretty much up and running...except one thing...

In Device Manager under Other Devices, I have 3 entries that say Base System Device. I've updated the chipset driver and the graphics driver. Any ideas?

I'm using a Dell Inspiron E1505 with Windows XP Home.

Thanks for the help and patience!

Yeah, I had installed the Intel driver, but somehow missed the Ricoh one. Now that I installed that and updated DirectX, everything seems to be running smoothly.

Thanks so much for the help!:)

OK, so just when I thought things were okey-dokey...:cry

My brother tried to play FFXI on his laptop last night and apparently he's getting a blue-screen error message anytime between immediately after he starts playing up to an hour or so into the game. Here's the message:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
The problem seems to be caused by the following file: igxpdx32.dll
    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

    Technical information:
    *** Stop: 0x00000050 (0xE297F104, 0X00000000, 0XBF385265, 0X00000001)
    *** IGXPDX32.DLL - Address BF385265 Base at BF1D800, Datestamp 00000000

From what I can gather so far, this is either (or both) the chipset driver or the graphics driver. I'm pretty sure I have the correct version of both, since I got them off the model-specific Dell site.

I've read that I should restart in Safe mode, uninstall the graphics driver, then restart and reinstall.

Does this sound right or is there a better solution? Thanks so much!!

BSOD's really aren't my thing, but that .dll seems to be part of the Intel graphics package.
This is the Intel driver from Dell for your PC:

You may want to reinstall your chipset first just to be sure there wasn't a bad file in it.

Also, make sure that you have enough disc space available for the game's needs. If your HDD is nearly full it can contribute to problems.

Thanks so much for your help, musksnipe! It looks like the problem was that the Video Driver I had downloaded on the Intel site was too new for my system, even though it was for the correct video card.

I ended up ordering the "Drivers and Utilities" CD from Dell, and the video driver on this CD (which was an older version of the one I had downloaded) did not contain the dreaded igxpdx32.dll file and...so far...I have had no problems!:-D

Again, I appreciate all the help. You and Major Geeks have been a huge help!
