I just had a Maxtor 60GB hard drive die on me, it was a hard drive I had added to my computer when I bought it about two years ago. It was set up as a slave and did just fine until it croaked.
I bought a Maxtor MaXline 250GB that is new, never been used before at all, and put it in but my computer is not recognizing it. I know the drive is working because I hear it spinning.
What do I need to do to fix this so my computer (PC running Windows XP) will recognize the drive?

Is it IDE or SATA? If IDE did you set the jumpers to either Master or Slave?

Is the BIOS recognizing the drive? Have you formatted it?

In XP Right-click My Computer>select Manage>in the left pane...Disk Management do you see the drive?

    IDE drive.

Have not formatted it and bios is not detecting it nor can I see the drive in disk management

I even tried unplugging the master drive and plugged in this drive as the master and I get a message no hard drive found. :(

This is the basic troubleshooting guide http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.j...toid=6bb14a3cdde5c010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD

It says the default jumper setting is cable select--I would set it to Master or Slave depending where you want the drive.

If that doesn't work I would check the BIOS for the auto-detect option under Disk Configuration or such.

If you boot from the installation CD does it recognize anything?

Oh, and when you set the jumpers you have to do it from the label/instruction sheet on the drive. Don't just match it to the drive that was in there--different drive manufacter's have different jumper settings.

I've done all that and still nothing.

I even mounted the drive into an external case with a USB cable and the computer wtill won't read it or even acknowledge it is there. :confused

All I can think of asking is how big is your current master drive? and if your BIOS is several years old perhaps it needs to be updated.

Maybe it is a bad drive? I would think the USB enclosure would rule out any BIOS problem but I really don't know.

    Anyone else have any ideas?

The master drive is 60GB, but I even unplugged it and put the 250 GB in as the master drive by itself and I still couldn't get the computer to recognize there was a drive in.

BIOS is about three or four years old. Not sure what to do either as I have never had this problem before.

I'm considering taking the drive to the local computer place and seeing if they can do something with it so my computer will at least read it.

Bought the computer in 2005/06 (either December or January, can't remember).

So it looks like I need a BIOS update?

Sorry, I am out of ideas, usually it is jumper confusion for an unrecognized drive.

I would think a 2005/6 Bios should be okay with a large drive. You could try the limit to 32GB setting if the drive has one as a test. You are using the new cable that came in the box?

Check the manufacturer's website for a BIOS update. Also look for any mention of an update for IDE controller.

That is all I can think of at the moment. I asked before but the Seagate CD is of no use if you start the computer using that with the drive attached as master?

CD doesn't help either. I've done this several times before and never had this issue. I think I am going to wave the white flag and run this down to the local computer shop and have the guy see what he can do. Maybe he'll have something that will make this work.

Thanks to everyone for their help and suggestions. At least I know I did everything I could.

Do you have service packs installed for XP? Before one of the service packs, the hd size had to be below 137GB.
Also, have you gone into the BIOS to see if anything needs to be changed to recognize a 250GB hd?
You must have a 48-bit LBA compatible BIOS and you must have XP SP1 installed.
