    Hi,

Last few day's I have this crazy "urge" to build a webserver but I have no idea of what software is easiest&best to use.
Also when it comes to security issue's I could do with some tips.

    I want to use a Pentium 3, 500MHZ, 128mb.

    Thx.

From personal experience, I would recommend Apache.

okay, depends what you want it for.

first off, do you want to use Windows? If so then get windows 2000 Advanced server or just plain server will do the job okay. Or if you are adventurous, Windows Server 2003. Tried that its pretty good. Use this if you intend to use ASP or anything like that. Most microsoft based stuff wont work on Apache or *nix without 3rd party software.
You can also run apache in windows, which im using atm, seems to run pretty well, a little hard to configure, but thats just the way it goes. This supports php and cgi scripting, but no ASP.

If you want to go with a *nix system, then the only way to go would be apache. unfortunatley i have no experience of setting this up from scratch, just tweaking it.

Im sure someone will be able to contribute on that area...

Also just wondering, what kind of connection are you planning to use it on? do you have all your router settings up good ?(that is forwarding port 80 to the web server)

** just to clairify, Windows 2000 Server and 2003 server have IIS built in, which is the web server. You can configure it by going to start, programs, admin tools, IIS configuration (i think, bit rusty)

If you just want to put pictures, music and have a small operation, there is WebSiteRobot from www.netforall.com, and by their words for a small business.

It sits in a folder on your own drive and connects to their server for access. I set it up and had it running in about 15 minutes which included reading a little of the manual.

It is free for now, but I read in their EULA that the use of their site for free is limited. I would assume it would be a subscription service, but could not find any details on free use time or price. Maybe drop them a note and let me know before I put too much work into it.

You can also go here .It's a newbie web site developer's site with a forum. I'm getting some good info just lurking. They have a lot of links to other help sites.
