Trying To Figure Out What Might Be Wrong With Hp Laptop

Hi everybody!
I was given an HP 15 G 020dx (I know, old, but it runs win 10 which I need for school) by my son who broke the screen a while back. Since he was on deployment and couldn't replace the screen or computer for months, he kept using it until the screen no longer functioned. I ordered a new screen and installed it (several times to make sure I had it right, sigh.). At first the computer would boot up and I would get a background light on the screen which made me think I had not connected it right, so I tried again. I'm sure now I have the screen connected properly, but now the computer won't even boot. I've tried a bunch of the reset stuff, taking out the power/battery and holding down the start, and the windows button/b/start button one, but it isn't responding. Is there something else I might be overlooking? I'm OK with putting more time and money into it if I can figure out what is going on. Or should I just return the screen and buy something I know works for now?

Before you bought a screen, you should have hooked up an external monitor to see if the video chip still worked.

The computer might be powering up but since there is no display, you can't tell if it is booting up or not.

 

I thought of that, but it is a simple device and has no vga plug in just hdmi for which I have nothing to plug into without waiting for an adapter to get shipped. I'm pretty sure it's not booting up now because I could hear it before and there was a backlight on the screen and now it isn't making any noise and none of the power lights are coming on. It sounds like it could be a can of worms though.
(we also tested it before with the old screen and it did turn on, although it was really effed up, so I think the vid chip still functions)

 

You don't have a modern TV?

 

Nope. Haven't needed one. I've been using my computer for everything since 1997.

 

Find someone who does, or has a monitor.

 

I've talked a few other people and it sounds like I should just scrap it and buy a newer one. Thanks for your time!
