I am trying to get rid of IE altogether, but I have tried a few things i have seen posted on the net and none of them have worked, I mainly use Netscape but it seemd inevitable that IE still tries to open windows, can anyone help me, by the way i am using WinXP Pro, and I would at least like to be able to uninstall IE6 and go back to using 5.5

IE 6 is integrated into WinXP and you can't unistall it, and you can't roll it back to IE 5.5. I use Firefox and there are still a couple of things that open IE by default, Yahoo Mail is one, if I open it from the shortcut. I don't know if there is a way to truly make Netscape or any other browser the default browser.

tbh... I would not want to fully remove IE as its the easiest way to get OS update from windows update site, yes FF and a bit of messing around will achieve similar but IE is still the best option.

as for making Netscape the default, have you tried in Add/Remove > Set Program Access and Defaults > Custom then to untick IE and tick Netscape?

What issues do you have? Perhaps I can help! :)

If you use the "Automatic Updates" feature, then you "shouldn't have any problems installing the latest updates".

    Posted earlier.....

you could always try (at your own risk) using firefox to download updates via:

Firefox is my default browser, everything opens with Firefox except a couple of things, Windows/Microsoft Update, of course, and Yahoo mail, if I use the shortcut.

    Microsoft Update - Target = C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\muweb.dll,LaunchMUSite
    Wndows Update - Target = %SystemRoot%\system32\wupdmgr.exe
    Yahoo Mail - Target = C:\WINDOWS\system32\RUNDLL32.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\Yahoo!\Common\ymmapi.dll,OpenURL http://mail.yahoo.com/?.redir=ymmapi9

Having checked the file associations everything is as it should be for Firefox being the default browser. So, what is it about the OpenURL command that it defaults to IE. Can it be changed, to open Firefox? I am convinced this is what causes some things to open in IE instead of the default browser.

If we can solve this, then we can make any browser we want truly the default browser
