Trying to identify the exact monitor I have (laptop) - Dell.

I've been trying to find out the make/model (or at least the proper vertical and horizontal frequencies) of the LCD that came with my Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop.
I've been on to tech support today (the manual is useless) and below is all the information I have been able to get...

" the LCD installed in your system is 17" ULTRASHARP WIDE SCREENWUXGA (1920 X1200) "

" The Functional Description would be LCD 17, LG, GWVA, Sullivan. Contains X8602 and the part number would be M9396. "

After getting that all I was able to get was marketing blurb...

" The LCD on this system has a "shiny" (aka - TrueLife) finish like the previous 700M - Molokai. "

I've had a Google for a few things from the above responses and haven't really turned up anything of much use to me. If anyone knows of a way I can find out the proper specs (ideally with make/model too) can you let me know?

This is all so I can set up a Linux install on my machine (XP works fine as it came pre-installed and set up) but I figured Hardware would be the best place for the thread.

    Looking forwards to any responses.

    Cheers.

maybe I was lucky, but Linux read my EDID for the monitor specs.

    Then, I don't use SUSE.

Well, it is an Inspiron 9300, but the specs are nothing like mine...

Mine has an ATi Mbility Radeon X300, that has a GeForce 6800go
    Mine has a 1.86GHz Pentium M, that has a 2GHz

I also don't see any mention of a monitor of a higher res than 1440x900@70.
    Mine is 1900x1200.

As far as I know my monitor is 1900x1200x60Hz, but if I can get the info I'm looking for I'll know for certain.
At the moment I'm running at a lower res and 60Hz, so the screen lucks a bit mucky, when it's running at full the clarity is fantastic.

    Thanks for the link though.

So add the resolution in your xorg.conf file.

Moving this to Linux, it has very little to do with hardware.

It isn't the resolution that is the problem though.
There's something in the SaX2: 11 Configuration window asking about Horizontal and Vertical resolution - I've been given the impression (rightly or wrongly) that putting in the wrong refresh rates can have terminal effects on the monitor, so while I could under-specify them both and be on the safe side, I would rather have the full res and refresh available to me.

Aside from that though, (and here's the Linux newbie coming back out again) how do I go about getting to the xorg.conf file and editing it? That way at least I'll be able to be up to the proper resolution and not 1680x1050 like I am at the moment.

    Post your xorg.conf file.

    Better yet...

Ok, I'll run that in Windows (yes I'm dual booting at the moment)

Still don't know where xorg.conf is though - any tips to help me find the thing?

    /etc/X11/xorg.conf

    Right, thanks for that.

I'm still getting to grips with Console.
The last time I did any serious command line stuff was before I got Windows 3.11 many moons ago.
Since then it has only been to rename a file that windows refused to play ball on, and even then only on MS-DOS.

Getting back into command line, while working on an OS that is still alien to you is not the easiest thing in the world. I'm getting there, but it's going to take a while. Gotta love learning new things :)

Anyway I've got to get ready to go out - I'll continue with this (and post xorg.conf contents) on here sometime over the weekend.

    Cheers.

You posted you were installing SUSE And Ubuntu Edgy.

Which one install is giving you fits? I think SUSE uses KDE and Ubuntu is Gnome based.

You can view files in KDE using Konqueror.

What country do you live in BigShot?

Dell in Europe are different than US Dell laptops sometimes.

    Adrynalyne...
I'm hitting a brick wall with that xorg.conf thing.
Trying to run I keep getting "no such file or directory" - I think it may be the X11 part that it doesn't like but I really can't say for sure (comes with being a bit green I think)

    BoredOutOfMyMind...
I don't have Ubuntu installed yet - that's on the cards once I get my SuSE install working properly. For now I'm just working in SuSE (KDE at the moment but I also have Gnome installed)

Also, I live in the UK. Specs of Dell machines vary wildly even within countries as each one is tailor made. I've got the highest res monitor I could get with the 9300 and gig of RAM. Others I know with the same model, have lower res monitors and less RAM.

Anyway, UK. What I know about my monitor as told to me by Dell when I got in touch with tech support is listed in the OP.

    Ok a quick update.
In the console I've typed /etc/X11/xorg.conf and got the following.

    bash: /etc/X11/xorg.conf : Permission denied

Any suggestions as to why I'm getting "Permission denied" when entering what I did?

Just switched over to windows and run the app Adrynalyne asked me to, when I click the Retrieve EDID Data button I get the following error.
    "Unable to locate EDID Data.
Using the Control Panel, please make sure that a Monitor has been Detected by Windows 2000"
