Trying to "Ratchet-down" this PC/System ...

Ok, I have run (used) Firefox since ... well, since I've known about it (4, 5-6 years?). however, I've always also kept IE (now "7") installed on the PC, "just in case" ...

FF "3" has presented some "issues" (to put it nicely) for me, that I really no longer wish to deal with (sorry, I am apparently hopelessly lost on the whole new Bookmarks "Organize Bookmarks" - thing). I suppose I'm just stuck in the past.

As well, FF "3" seems to s-l-o-w (demand/drain - take a :crap DUMP in) this PC. I can actually "hear" a difference when it's running (PC "sounds" as if an old lady was attemtping to drag a tractor-trailer up the side of a mountain, backwards - by her TEETH! ... you can hear her bite-down on the bumper, and start straining ... but she ain't going too far, too fast. If ya know what I mean that is, of course ...).

Am I exposing or "risking" this PC to any reasonably-serious Security Issues by GOING-BACK to FF 2.0.0.13 (which I saved for just such an occasion)? Also, I really don't need to keep two browsers loaded on this machine at all times - do I?? I just keep IE as an back-up, in case FF "breaks-down" (for lack of a more tech. term). Can't I always get IE "back" (from MS) if I wish? Though on second thought, I seem to recall having trouble getting MS "Updates" via (through) FF - at times (??) ...

Thirdly, is it possible (likely) that I would see any sort of BOOST in Performance in this PC, by unistalling a Zone Alarm Firewall (free version), and going back to XP's default OS FW? I also welcome opinions on XP's "veracity" - though "StudioT" here has pretty well convinced me :-D that it is "stout" enough ... ;)

And lastly, I am also looking at the possibility of trading in (uninstalling) the Alwil/Avast (free version as well ... "4", I think[?]), Antivirus - which works well, and which I really like - I'm simply wondering if I might find an AV (and FW) that use less resources (since those two are "Real-Time"/always "on").

    Thanks in advance,
    g ... !

Thank you (as usual) Mr. Trent.

Though "tinker" I did do (you know me ... can't seem to "help" myself - literally and figuratively speaking).

I have (at least for the time being) switched to Online Armor for the FW on this (XP) PC/system. I am getting-along, so far, "well-enough" with it (though not yet perfectly clear on the Updating of it [?]).

I seem to have learned a "few" things (thanks to you ALL here at MG's!) since last winter/spring when I was attempting to work with Comodo (and that was/is on my other PC, which was brand new at the time, and had/has Vista ... not that I am claiming any conflicts between Vista and Comodo - I may simply have been overwhelmed trying to "learn" both simultaneously ...?).

I have decided to stay with Alwil/avast (on both PC's) for now, at least for the time-being (probably wise, at least for me, eh?). I really like the program ("we" have "gotten-along" - to date - on both systems), and I had "issues" (personal ones, I'm certain) with AVG 8, when I last attempted working with it on both PC's/OS's. Though again, that may simply have been, at least on the Vista system, too much at one time - for me.

    Thanks again,
    Glenn ...

No intent to "bump", simply ran-out of "Edit time".

Just wanted to also mention that I did switch-back to FF (2.0.0.17) on my XP OS, am happy with it, and aware of the 'January `09 loss of support'.)

    Thanks again!
    Glenn.
