I have been in what passes for the BIOS of this computer and tried to select the CD boot option with no success. I'll post as picture of the screen in the next post.

I'll be a Monkey's Aunt, Figured it out taking the pictures. I've been fighting this problem for months. The solution was to select SATA 2 instead of the CD drive. I post this in case anyone else has the same issue.

BIOS as you knew it disappeared years ago, to be replaced by UEFI. The idea was to prevent users from booting into anything other than the installed OS. There are of course ways around this and you have finally discovered one. Well done!

Dumb Luck beats careful planning ever time. I like having Linux in my toolbox because Windows will simply not let you erase or change some files. It's my computer dang it!

Any idea how to get this computer to boot from a flash drive?

I suspect it might be a bit faster on the boot up.

Your post made me wonder why or where it came from. So I had to dig out my 'to go' drive. I have a Win 7 install that is almost pristine. So it would fit on a 32g San Disk cruiser I had. I made a copy of the system with WINtoUSB. I first ran it on that system and it was a dupe; desktop background, screensaver, bootup password. After that I mistakenly booted a Win10
pc I was working on. Imagine my surprise when somehow it needed 'my' password to boot and then up comes 'my' desktop. I did get the Win 10 working. Still works.

So tonite I got it out and rebooted. Yeah it was a slower boot than the ssd but to be honest, it surprises me.I navigated to a slimbrowser link on my ssd. Had to put my phone in usb tether mode and off to mg. Went to the home page, downloaded Blank and Secure which is offered today. Extracted that for later and really it is faster than me. Now I wish I had put it on a larger and faster usb, but foolishly I always say there's tomorrow.

A product of a rainy day. A novelty. Another tool in the bucket.

I have a win 7 install Flash drive I made and have successfully used on other computers. Now to get this computer to recognize a bootable flash drive (if possible). So much to learn so few brain cells left.

Sure enough, it worked first time, It never occurred to to start the BIOS w/ the thumb drive inserted. Thanks guys, It has been a productive couple of days. It was much faster off the thumb drive too.

That is when you are just booting to the thumb drive files, not into Windows. As Imandy Mann has said, you can run Windows from a thumb drive but it's not the same Windows installed in your computer, it's a separate install and it will run a lot slower than your installed version. Useful as a tool but it's not an alternative to your main system.

Never thought of doing that, So one drive with the installation software, The other with an OS. sounds like a good kludge if a HD dies. Betcha it wears out a flash drive fast.

I never thought of that. You may be right. I know the one I used I got it in a 3-pak at a good price. One of the 3 may still be unused so no big deal if it did wear out. Just tinkering.
