trying to run UBUNTU on MSvirtualmachine

am having fits trying to get UBUNTU to run on an MSVirtualmachine virtual hard drive. have tried install, acts like it's installing, then screen goes stripes, then colours - oh, the colours! Reminds me of the old days (none so good).
Never seems to actually get to a running config.
Ran fine on same computer when booted from disk..........
Set virtual machine mem. @ 512MB, well over what UBUNTU asked for.

Any thoughts?
