Trying to set up a small home network.

Experiencing failure in setting up a home network. Here are the details:
2 Dells running Windows XP, both connected to a switch. I've run the XP network wizard on both. At the end of the set up on the "server" I am instructed to install XP disc. Before installation of needed software from the XP disc can complete an incompatability message appears stating that AGV miniport is an offender . At the end of the set up on the "client" I find in my network places that the client computer appears as an icon but there is no icon for the server. Both computers pass the ping test. I am running a full version of AVG on the server and a free version on the client. I don't know how to respond to the miniport error. Is it a piece of garbage from the free avg that I previous installed on the server or a necessary item in the full version.
