Hello everybody. I read that I could add memory to improve speeds on my laptop, it is a Compaq Evo N600c with two memory slots, one has a 256 MB card in it, so I ordered a 512MB card to fit that model thinking that all i had to do was slip it in? Alas as always that is not the case, when i put the card in and startup it say that I have to do something with the BIOS, so I took it out again. I know very little about computers as I am an old git, can anyone help me through this installation.

I just installed some RAM the other day and it went smoothly, are you sure you have the right RAM? what type of RAM did you get? as far as installation goes it is pretty simple.

1.lift the clips on each side of the RAM slot.
2.get the RAM lined up correctly and push it in
3.close the clips, if they wont close you proabably put it in wrong

I ended up getting one side pushed in and clipping it and then pushing down on teh otehr side, i don't know if that is the right way to do it what i did but it worked.

OK, i tried putting the card back in again, it fits in fine. This time when i powered up i got something different. The message read, "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupted : system32\Drivers\pci.sys.
You can attempt to repair this by starting Windows Setup using the original setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair".
This computer came with Windows 2000Pro installed and i upgraded it to XP pro, so that is the only CD-ROM i have, an upgrade disc!
So i took the new memory out again and when i powered up with just the original memory in it, at the first startup screen there were now three boxs, ( F1. Save Changes), (F2. Ignore Changes), (F10. Computer Setup). I didn't know what to do so I pressed Ignore Changes, and here I am again!
Do you have any ideas what I should do?

OK, here's a thing, I took out the old 256MB board from the first slot and replaced it with the new 512MB board, powered up and it worked fine. So then I tried adding the old 256MB board back into the available 2nd slot and again it wouldn't work, so what's this all about, any idea's?

Maybe you have insufficient power to power the RAM, I don't really know anythign about powering laptops. maybe a bad RAM socket in your mobo
